How do people even go missing in forests? I can't comprehend how a dozen guys with sniffing dogs couldn't track down something as big as a person within a few days. How hard do they even look? If you get lost are you just screwed?

Go try it. Get a friend to help you. Blindfold yourself, have the friend spin you around, then have them walk you a ways off trail, then try to find it again without a map, compass, or using any GPS.

Not saying they are. OP's question was how do people get lost or not found. The searchers are human enough to make errors and people get lost for reasons. If OP wants further insight and understanding OP should join SAR and learn why people get lost or learn why people don't get found. I'm glad you're smart.

Sorry if I'm being salty about this whole thing but even if somebody was hiding out in the wilderness you'd expect a bunch of professional /out/ rangers to be able to find them even if they were chilling in a cave.

I don’t think 3-5 year old kids get so tired of life and don’t want to be found. Did you even read the Missing 411 books? The only cases they collect data about are the ones without possibility of human or animal interference.

The reality of it is that if you fall down in a patch of grass and can't get back up it basically takes somebody stepping directly on you to be found again. I used to hide from people in some woods that grew next to my neighbourhood and even fat retarded preteen me wearing a bright red hat went undetected 95% of the time.

Last year when my grandpa died out innawoods his truck was found only a few hundred yards from the road, but he walked the wrong way and he died because of it. Its tough to navigate, even if you have a relatively solid point of reference.
