Ghost towns, finding and exploring them, and the lore behind them have been big topics in the US since before the end of the California gold rush. It started with people looking to salvage gear and shit left behind and evolved more into the haunted or just historical aspects of them as society modernized.

Kokomo is gone, it's under the tailings ponds of the Climax Molybdenum mine along with Robinson and a couple other towns.

Most those places are gone by now. Most of the buildings that were standing in the 60's have collapsed or been burned.

Back in the 1800s, some towns exploded from nothing to 10000 people back to nothing in the course of like 2-3 decades. Even by the 1910s you could probably fill a book with records of ghost towns.

Nevada has them everywhere. Up until the late 90's most of these towns were in very very good shape. you could still find old bottles and food stuffs etc tools. They are all still there mostly but definitely not intact like before. My dad and I used to go into the portals and peak around. One time as a child in new mexico we found an old settling that still had the bed and pillows perfect shape in them it was amazing .

Not sure why. Towns went up and down in the span of years during the gold rush and western settlement. This book would have been published near or at least 100 years after. Plenty of time for towns to live, die and be worn by time.

British Columbia is full of them, most are gone now but sprang up during the gold rush era. Likely in the Caribou and Richmond Court House on the border of Barkerville is nice. Quite a few little ghost towns around those parts that are pretty comfy/sad that people didn't stay post 30's or make a go of it.
