Depending on the desert, you have to carry a gun because of coyotes and/or cougars, and a first aid kit. Stay in the shade from 12pm to 4pm, do not sleep on bare ground because of scorpions, snakes and maybe karakurts. Always put your boots upside down or hang them somewhere, shake them out well before putting them back on. Wearing pic related is a must.
All of the above safety measures considered, desert hiking is pretty damn great.
