>>1619987I keep thinking about doin a couple little jobs here and there for side money. This lady really wanted me to change her starter on her car this weekend, but she is a crazy old cat lady who is broke and it’s a pain in the ass on that car so I let some other boomer volunteer his services since he thought it would be 2 bolts and a plug.
If it wasn’t the cat lady, I could’ve made an easy $300-$400 in an afternoon because shops charge ~$1000 for a starter on that car and I could grab the part on RockAuto for $100. I saved that lady a bunch of money either way though because she’s stubborn and ignorant. The car wasn’t turning over because the starter was dead, so she starts pumping the gas pedal (which does absolutely nothing in a modern Honda with all electronic fuel shit) and then it finally cranked over and started and she runs around to these shops saying “It started when I was pumping the gas!” without mentioning that it wasn’t even cranking before, so they want to sell her on all these fuel system treatments and a fuel pump, but I stopped her from getting any of that. Told her for like 2 weeks that it’s the starter and she should order it online for cheap because it’s going to die on her soon, and only drive the car when absolutely necessary. Ofc she’s driving around all day feeding stray cats and it finally dies for good on Sat and she needed a tow.
But then you run into a liability thing. I’m not trying to do an alternator on somebody’s car and then have them come try and blame me for their transmission going out 1000mi later because I’m the last person to touch the car.
And working for myself completely, it sounds nice, but there’s a lot more risk. My regular job is a pain in the ass, but at least I know my paycheck will be in my bank account on Friday morning since it’s a billion dollar company.
