I was interested in trying to get a bit further south maybe to check out the coal mine you can visit in Beckley and the Laurel Fork and Cranberry Wilderness areas and their trails but uh I don't think Mingo is ideal for /out/ hiking, could be wrong.
That said, I love the idea of backroads and using smaller roads to get into mountainous areas so you don't have to shlep uphill up a mountain as much.
I was wondering if anywhere rents ATVs in NE/Spruce Knob area of WV but a quick search showed only options were like way further SW mostly outside the high mountains proper.
There's a trail called Lower Seneca Creek, that's no longer used after a hurricane or two, and there's a gravel road at a trailhead for another trail that apparently connects you to that disused trail that is on private property now but they said nobody hunts on Sundays so if the gated gravel road has the gate closed (i.e. nobody is using the hunting camp at the time that's BETWEEN the gravel road parking lot and the waterfalls it's ok-er to trespass.
U can't ask Forest Service about those trails either they just tell u not to do it.
I love finding small little used dirt roads that take you to lesser known trails in WV.
