How did they cut firewood in the before times? Before they had any kind of saw? Just cut fuck loads of little trees down and finish with an axe? I cant imagine doing anything over 3/4 inches thick. Must have taken forever.

My family has always had a wood stove and never a saw. We just cut down lots of dead trees on our property and split them with an axe. How easy it is really depends on the wood and what kind of axe you have. If you have the right axe, and a bunch of dead ash trees, it isn't that hard, but a bit time consuming.

What time period are we talking about where saws are unavailable yet axes are? Both are simple stone tools made by flintknapping, if you are able to make a simple axe, I don't see why you would be unable to make a saw.

ive seen people split larger branches by wedging them between two close trees and applying force to break them.
the really big wood for building they would weaken with fire.

In "before times" Man was nomadic, and wood has to dry for 6+ months before it is good quality fuel so nomads would have chucked deadwood onto the fire.
As soon as Man became stationary axes and saws were developed almost immediately, or perhaps it was the invention of such tools that initially allowed Man to establish settlements before agriculture.

Sure, I get axes, they are easy to craft up out of rocks and shit.
But if you've ever tried to fucking cross cut a log into smaller pieces with an axe, you'll know it's fucking bullshit and takes an incredible amount of effort and time.
I can not imagine that is how they did it.

You cant effectively split a log with stone tools if it's longer than 2 feet or so, so they had to have cut it somehow.

Deadfall doesn't need to be broken up very much, let alone sawed. Also, if they have fire then they can use the fire to cut anything. That means building a fire at the base of a tree to burn through the base and fell the tree. Then using fire to cut through sections to make logs. They even used fire to make canoes by burning out everything that isn't a canoe. To fell a tree with fire, you need to remove the bark well above where the fire will be so the flames do not set the bark on fire above the cut.

Original author didn't account for plate tectonics being so active in the regions they were researching in. The origin would have been an area off the southern coast of italy which sunk when the plates shifted and buried the whole area below water. The original paper for mitochondrial eve also only checked for one lineage and not for other groups lineage.

I just go around and collect them, just had a lot of fun tho. A few weeks ago it was fairly windy and 2 sizeable(6+" diameter) branches fell and i just chopped them up with a hatchet. Took like an hour but i have quite a sizeable fire stack once it dries out. The main logs will take a few months but everything else should be good in a matter of weeks. Now imagine my predicament but scaled up to having a few dozen trees on your property

Reminder that Inuit live in the far north where it is always winter and only use a single fucking seal oil lamp for heating an entire household. You can go a long way with little fuel if you use tents/caves properly and don't expect 20°C room temperature heating.
