Short explanation: horror is internal, a feeling, not something objective. They're trying to provoke a reaction. People find it disturbing to be suddenly confronted with a situation that they can't rationalize away. Even if all the elements of the situation are innocuous, the situation is unfamiliar and that unfamiliarity represents a potential danger.
If tomorrow morning you found a pocket watch in your refrigerator, what would run through your mind? Who was in here last night, why didn't I hear them, what else did they do, is this a message and if so what does it mean? A bunch of questions, an unexpected violation of normalcy.
That's where the discomfort is likely to peak, though. You're going to ask people, check things, maybe change your locks, maybe have an uneasy few nights, and if nothing else weird happens you put it behind you.
