>>1617497I'm moving to acreage in a town, population 120, in less than 10 days, so I can probably give you an idea of what would work there soon! There are two towns, about 30 minutes away, each with populations of around 10,000 each though.
I'm a self employed gravel truck owner/operator, and have operated some heavy equipment also, but other than that I have no post secondary education at all. I also have no connections there at all. It is fairly remote and rugged, for the most part.
I think it's 'do or die' in these places often times, and I am prepared to do what I have to do if I can't keep my gravel truck rolling. Many people in the area seem to be self employed at a much higher rate than you would find in larger cities. Trades is always a great skill, but even if you're handy you could probably make it work by doing what you need to do. Fix fences if you have to. Clear snow from driveways if you have to. Hell, sell trinkets at the local souvenir shop if you have to!
I'm crazy for doing what I'm doing, but I believe if you want something bad enough, you can make it work.
I live in a big city, and am so fucking done with this congested and overpopulated shithole, that the risk is worth the reward for quality of life. I have reached the tipping point finally, and if you ever do too, and you're not a complete idiot, I think you'll be OK. You won't find your six-figure dream job, but remember you're not going there for that in the first place! Do what you must do!
