Outdoor activities you either can't do anymore or are just not feasible in this day and age. I love fishing, and I would give my left nut to go whaling. Even compared to shark fishing there is something so inherently intense about the idea of harpooning something that massive.

I've always wanted to go somewhere /out/ remote enough that I could enjoy 2 straight weeks alone without running into a person guaranteed. Havent found such a place yet, but it seems they dont really exist within my reach

Its probably not feasible because I'd most likely die but I often fantasise about being stranded deep in the woods somehow, like a plane crash or something, and having to survive and make it back with what I got on me and what I know.

Did you read moby dick? It will either satisfy any urge to hunt whales you have or increase it, doubtfully the latter. Get an unabridged edition and it’s literally describing whale hunting moment by moment with every tool described in great detail.

Sometimes I stay up late at night and think about what it must have been like to be a salmon fisherman in the 1800’s. My home lake and the Great Lake tributaries were flooded with Atlantic salmon. For them to now be basically extinct in our area if not for small stocking programs is soul crushing to think about. I just wanna go back to how things were bro’s.

I was not ready for this aspect of the book when I first read it. I thought it was going to be a wild tale of chasing a white whale, not a detailed history of whaling.

I'm fished out. I loved fishing. I fished every day. Then it was no longer a challenge in any manner at all. Decades later I can't even look at a fishing rod without feeling apprehension for all that wasted time and time wasted should I start fishing again. Especially, since we can't eat fish caught around here anymore due to high fucking pollution levels.

If I leaved near an ocean, I'd probably pick up a rod and have a wee bit of fun since I'd not know what I was pulling in.

since you mention it, and more or less in line with whaling, I recently read The Golden Spruce and Woodsmen of the West and, ethical considerations aside, MAN does hand-felling giant old-growth sitka spruce or inland cedar sound cool.

Anon you need to get yourself to Greenland and be willing to pay the Inuit enough to go on a Whale hunt, sure it's for Baleen or Grey Whales, but still you can do it.

That or go to Japan or Norway, neither of these countries have signed up to the moritorium on Whale hunting, however the only do it in limited numbers.

My grandfather actually did this as a summer job. All his stories made me want to go out and sign up as soon as I could.

sometimes you don't want to wait until a satellite is overhead to see whether there's a fire. also can be useful as human repeaters for radio communications.

but yeah, there are like six full time seasonal staffed lookouts on my forest alone, plus a bunch that the patrols and prevention guys sometimes staff during lightning busts and whatnot.
