Me, doggo and the nipper were going out to make a den in the woods earlier this year. Naturally like true /out/ists we were camo'd up; me in fleck and the kid in some unofficial polish fingers splash suit. Happily walking down a Hawthorne lined bridleway that ran between some woods and a wall when we see horses being rode up the path. I call doggo into a clearing in the side of the Hawthornes and hold my daughter's hand out of the way so they could pass us. Horses flat out refused to pass us. The rider asked me to do something about it, straight up told her I have a dog and a two year old and we are not in a position to do anything else so to pass or turn around. They turned around. I don't mind them and always call the dog into the side so they can go on enjoying their /out/ time but to insist I do something about their problem irked me somewhat. It's bad enough they allow them on the roads.

Can confirm. Rode horses most ofmy life. Dad was cowboy. I grew up ranching cattle. Horses are nothing but controlled fear and terrified brain animals. A Doggo has more sense and thinking ability.
Riding horse is cool and nice while its not totally freaking out(older it gets more mellow, but slower). Younger "fresher" "green" horse can fool you, one minute seems ok and less than a second it freaks the fuck out because it saw a shadow move on the ground or someone 20 feet away scratches their ass.
I like riding a horse but i would rather trust my own feet. I've seen and heard about many trainwrecks( horse chimpouts) and know how easily anyone can get hurt badly from it. Myself included.
I value my ability to still be able to walk on my own two legs. Its worth more than anything.

As someone who grew up with a couple friends into horses and fucking dressage I can say that if anything "autistic" is being way too easy going on them. It's like their survival strategy is to break their legs or kill themselves at the slightest sign of danger, or a noise, or a change in humidity.

My friend's barn had to install a big fence because they were next to a turkey farm and despite the horses seeing these birds every single fucking day, any time you'd ride past them most of the horses would briefly flip out and hurt them selves or throw their rider when the turkeys came into view. You could literally ride in a loop for an hour and every single time the horse would "scare" at the turkeys.

Maybe wilder horses are smarter but dressage horses are more fragile and stupid than a baby that just learned to crawl. They will jump onto fences and cut them selves in half, they will get stuck between buildings, they will randomly for no reason at all break their legs. If there is a way to kill or hurt themselves they will find it. And people drop 50k or more on these idiots.

Here's a question. If you could replace human history of taming horses with any other animal what would it be? Think practicality not just what is cool. I'd say Camels, they can survive in harsh environments, can carry bigger loads than horses and seem (at least to me) a lot less likely to buck you off and kill you.

The simple reality is that horses, while being amazing animals, are the dangerous retards of the animal kingdom. In the 1800s people used to get killed by horses all the fucking time. The most common cause of death among cowboys was getting dragged to death. Most of this is due to lack of "horse sense". A simple mistake with a horse you've know for years can kill you - like walking behind one, getting kicked, and dying in a stable from a ruptured liver. They're powerful, huge, and terrified of everything until they've been trained to calm down. Even then, they're never going to be like dogs, they're not cuddly, and they will try to challenge their trainer's position of dominance despite the trainer knowing better.
Horses have to be taken for what they are, not for what we want them to be, or for what TV and westerns would have us think of them as. They are livestock, not pets.

If you want a cuddly pal, get a burro. They are 50% ears, 50% weesnaw.

My Scout Master back in the day owned two sulky racing horses that he’d run at the Hazel Park Race Track (now gone) here in MI and he said horses are the dumbest animals, that you could corral a horse using only twine and ribbons and it would stay there until it starved to death but if there was a thunder clap 100 miles away, it would freak out and run off.

Horses are like Lambos, beautiful to look at, but really not very practical.

It did, but then we culled that trait. The war horses of Europe had nerves of iron, but they were also somewhat unstable and prone to aggression and that did not make them good choices for literally anything other than war horses so when we did away with actual mounted calvary we quickly lost those breeds and the few that survive were heavily selected against those traits. Or at least that's the story I have always heard.

Because in the wild they were prey and pack animals. So they’re spooked because the flight response worked for them for so long that it’s literally engrained in to their DNA to react and run. It’s also what helps them move as quickly as they do. If they lost that response they wouldn’t need as much muscle to run. Thusly losing speed.

It can be either when it comes to horses. You do get retarded owners but at the same time some horses will freak out over nothing. For example, I have a pony and a horse. I took them out for a walk this morning, the pony is just interested in trotting along and eating grass where she can but the horse will flip her shit because the road we are walking on is a road. It's weird to run across a mellow horse sometimes, when I was very young my Grandpa was just getting out of the draft horse business. He had this enormous Belgian named Jep that was just like a big zen cow, which is good because he was strong enough to pull a train car so I imagine that if he ever did lose his shit he could have done some serious structural damage to the ranch. I love horses and I pretty much only had good experiences with them but fucking around with a 500kg prey animal is always gamble. Most of the redneck owners I've seen treat them like shit too so it's not surprising they get their ribs crushed or some shit.

Jesus. I've known several people that have been fucked up from their horses. One girl died when horseboi was spooked and landed on her in the middle of nowhere. Dead way before AirMed could get to her. Horses are kinda shit.

When I got close enough, I saw walking beside the brown horse was a black horse I couldn't see, which was making the extra footsteps. The Horses walked away when they saw it wasn't their farmer come to feed them.
