What are the advantages of getting an internal frame pack over an external frame pack? I do mostly car camping and day-hiking, but am interested in getting more into backpacking, and am curious.

At face value, it seems to me that an external frame pack with a good rain cover is superior to an internal frame pack.

Externals are good for getting your stuff from your car to the campsite when you're car camping. You can lash pots and pans and sleeping bags and pillows and lanterns and tents to the frame. If you're hitting the trail, you want an internal. You just use less.

My all-around pack is an Osprey Variant 52. Great for back country solo runs. Great for summit runs both technical and non-technical. Tons of straps though.

My light-weight summit pack which can also serve as a back country pack if needed - Black Diamond, Speed 30. Light...not to strappy...tough.

big Gregory UM21, it's part of SPEAR system.
bombproof, extra-comfortable (even though heavy, but the shoulder straps and hip belt system is superior) - for long or speciality trips

Wisport (polish brand) custom made 35 litres, PALS and shit, but I meets my needs and honestly speaking I've used EVERY feature of this backpack.

75 liter. A bit on the heavy side because the fabric is rugged as fuck.

Internal frame. But fuck it, it's hands down the best frames I've ever worn.

I also own a Bergan 100L, but it's too large for most trips.

yep. but there is always a reason why the military sort them out. most surplus is 10-20 years old. a real outdoor rucksack is made from 'state of the art' materials. in addition they are highly ergonomic and lightweight.

What is the best non-PBA water bottle? I would prefer glass, however reviews are very mixed wrt durability. All metal ones seem to have some form of plastic in theirs spouts.

I remember my fathers scout canteen was all metal so I know it's possible.

That warranty isn't valid in all countries, though. Talked to the owner of my go to outdoor shop here in Germany a while ago and he said that life time warranties aren't really appilicable here...

He also said how he couldn't afford honoring life time warranties... sounded all a bit strange to me as I thought Osprey would be the ones that have to pay for that, not the shop owner.

Only reason I could think of is that Osprey doesn't cover shipping and sending a big pack to Colorado from Germany isn't exactly cheap, so the shop owner might have to pay for that. And if he isn't legally bound to do so by German law after the federally mandated warranty (2 years, IIRC) runs out, he might have an out there...

I supposse I could still send my pack directly to Osprey if anything would be wrong with it, but I'd have to pay for the shipping myself.

Yeah, that's how it's supposed to work. You cover shipping to Colorado and then they take care of everything else. Works the same way in the states, though shipping is probably much cheaper.

You should have a look at Lundhags GERO 35 WP (35 liter).

Or perhaps 50 litre? Go for Gunger 2.0 by Klattermusen

Both are airtight, waterproof, rugged as fuck and commonly used for mountaineering. (They take a lot of beating).

Pretty expensive though.

And anyone say go with surplus, I would not use a single thing the army has provided with the exception of maybe an alice pack. their not bad if you can get one for extremely cheap but definitely are some better packs out there for a little more. The army ruck has a lot of room and you can always add more because of the molle add-ons but its plastic frame is cheap, the buckles and stuff like that break easily, bottom zipper blows, though the material is fairly damn tough.

Can bust it out and take some shots/reviews for anyone that is interested. I know you can get them for around a 100ish from surplus stores around here, and probably cheaper online.

Yup. Still standard issue for Marines, and on it's way to becoming obsolete. Army still uses the redesigned MOLLE with poor load distribution and shitty zippers, hence the switch to the ILBE by the Marine Corps.

Also: I doubt that you've ever trekked anywhere seriously in weather if you wear a hoodie while you walk.

If you sweat (which you will do under longer walks) because of distance and load that shit will get wet and wear you down. You'll get cold and start to freeze. It takes long time to dry. It's not warm enough either.

You need wool for warmth. But you need something thats more breathable while you walk.

It's like my dad usually say: "You only do it wrong once in the wilderness".

I just read the other day about a guy who went trekking in the mountains. He fell and broke his leg and laid there for 4 days, until an helicopter luckily find him.

If you fall while climbing on/off a peak and break your leg. You'd want something better than the hoodie. That's all.

I use TNF Alteo 50. Pretty neat, comfy and suprisingly durable. The air tunnel works great too. I got rid of those mesh "pouches" on the hip belt though, they were useless. I've replaced them with proper pouches and now it's the best pack that I've ever owned.

I use a simple canvas messenger bag for EDC. I keep basic /out/ stuff in it but I also keep a netbook and other stuff in it.

For hiking I like to use a Everest. Its cheap and not the best, but I figure by the time it wears out I can get a new one. The one I have now I've had for about 3 years and has been on about 12 hiking trips but its starting to wear out. I'd say its not to bad for 35 bucks, pic related.

But I'm not gonna lie to you, its pretty uncomfy, and the straps make it hard to keep the weight off your shoulders and on your waist. If anyone can suggest a pack in a similar price range that is good I'd love to hear a name.

Their packs aren't bad. They have long term durability issues because they don't hot cut the fabric. I can't vouch for the suspension system on medium size packs. Examine how rigid the hipbelt is if you're going to pack heavy. Most of the weight goes on your hips.

Keep the weight low and its great. couldn't imagine carrying more than 30 lbs comfortably due to the thin suspension. I'm into UL hiking so I love it. if you get the 58L in large its actually a 63L. I trimmed some of the excess straps and got mine down to 2lbs 4oz. I've never carried more than 25 lbs in it though.

Also: What do you plan on bringing for shelter? Tent? Tarp? Sleeping bags can also eat anything between 5 and 15 litres of packing space - what do you have?

The amount of gear you bring on a 2 day trip shouldn't vary from a 10 day trip. The only difference is the amount of food and fuel you bring. If you prepare correctly, those things won't weigh more than a few pounds, so you're main consideration becomes volume. Find a pack with a good suspension system, stiff hipbelt, and a good fit. If you do a lot of peak bagging and don't want a full size pack, get a smaller one, but the suspension, hipbelt, and fit are still paramount.

Just had a long hard look at my Kestrel 38 and I could probably fit all your stuff on there... though I'd have to fasten the tent either with add-on straps/elastics or stick it under the front straps of the top compartment (which would mean that I would have to take it off everytime I want to access the main body).

Never done a solo trip with that one where I had to carry everything so it's all theoretical.

Water can be an issue, depending on where you're going. I usually go innadesert, so it's pack in what you want to drink or die of thirst. That's one of the reasons I'm happy with my Jansport external frame, I can hang water on the outside easily.

Yeah, I've had it for a number of years. Picked it up on sale at Big 5 when I was a poorfag, haven't found a reason to upgrade. I fear the day it fails and I have to do something about another pack or sending it in for repair.

It's kind of funny, I lucked into a great deer rifle (sporterized Arisaka) back when I was a high school student and haven't seen the need to upgrade it, either. Sometimes you find something that just works for you and it happens to be inexpensive.

On relatively flat, open terrain, an external will allow you to carry a heavier load more comfortably - it transfers the weight of your load more directly to your hips.

If you're climbing, scrambling, or bushwacking, internals are much less "tippy" - they hold the weight closer to your own center of balance.

Externals are less hot & sweaty. Internals are less prone to snagging on branches, rocks, luggage racks, and so on.

Horses for courses.

IMHO - anyone who doesn't own both, is compromising at least some of the time. Anyone trying to tell you one is "superior" to the other, in all situations, is a moron.

I use a Bach Specialist FA 3 for my last trip, ~ 90 litres. Comfort zone is up to 25 kg, with 27 it is at it limits and with 30 you have a shitty day walking. I think about upgrading to a Bergans Alpinist.

I use one of these. I've taken it on many hikes plus a few 14ers. It holds up super well. It can hold 3L of water and has lots of room for beers and food. It isn't the lightest but as long as you aren't in DYEL shape, you'll be just fine carrying it. I have a rifle scabbard that attaches perfectly on the back and will probably get a few other molle packs for first aid and such. Great pack in my opinion.

You can hardly find a better pack for this size. It's basically a 60/70L pack sized down to 35L, so it has everything you would expect from a 60L pack: comfy as fuck shoulder straps and hip belt which allow you to carry heavy as fuck loads, split main compartment with bottom opening, accordion pockets on the sides for an additional 6L if required, rain cover, loops and straps for walking poles, skis and ice axes...

The only downside is the weight: 1.4kg. Not overly heavy either, it's just in the average, but could be better. Still, it's so comfy it's hardly a problem.

And it is of course incredibly well made and durable, it seems like I'll be holding to this pack for at least 3 more years of intense /out/ing.

Not only you having great experience. Bergans Alpinist is like the number one choice of special operators in the world. It's famous among elite trekkers, bushcrafters, alpinists and miliatry forces. It's 4.35 kg but you can carry loads easily around 30-35 kg due to its amazing carrying system.

As said, the quality is not an issue, I just came back from Iceland, appreciating a Bergans tent, their godly Snohetta jacket and some rain trousers, all worked great under pretty nasty conditions.
It is just that that I don't play that often in the 30kg+ ballpark, so I'm not sure if I should spend €400+.

I've got the bag in your pick, I think it's the 55. Its a very solid 2day pack, a bit small for more than that but if you can find water regularly and don't have to pack winter gear its got plenty of room. Also, comfortable as fuck and carries 40lbs nicely. Full recommend for day hikes and even multiday hikes as long as you can pack efficiently.

I have a bergans alpinist. I am quite lanky (6'4½ 190lbs) and I still carry about 20-25kg 12+ hours and its just comfortable as fuck. When you get used to it though you can't really use anything else

Deuter 65 + 10 is a very versatile pack that will let you store just about anything. If your gear is cheap (eg does not pack down small) I would recommend a 75+ litre pack because a ten day trip is no fucking joke.

I personally have done three days and two nights with my kestrel, and that was solo. I'm confident I could manage a week solo. If I'm going with the misses and can split my tent and food with her then I'd double that.

Keep in mind that I'm in the SE USA though, so it doesn't get ultra cold here.

Seconding the Deuter 65+10. It's simple, durable and lean on unnecessary bells and whistles. $199 Is a great price for a bag that big, and it only weighs 3lbs. 11oz, whereas equivalent Gregory or Osprey bags weigh 4-5lbs.

If you want to go bigger, look at the Deuter Air Contact 75+10, bit more expensive but it does come with its own rain cover.

I'd be getting it for motorcycle trips as well. As the Canoe/portage principles seem to crossover well.

Think it depends on what kind of trips youre going to be taking. I've a 90L bag and tend to do 4 day trips, and its a bit too big for what I need it for (originally got it for a 21 day trek). Bigger bag also means if it is half empty youre carrying bag you dont need to be carrying, and its tempting to fill it up with stuff you dont need. Up to you to decide the design requirements

Those are the only things I don't carry myself.
I have very little spare clothes, basically one tshirt, and two sets of socks and undies, and none of my food requires cooking, though it is occasionally heated over a fire. That sure saves some space, but that hardly explains such a difference.

Apart from that, I have everything else, and then some, which includes things you haven't mentioned but probably carry:
>2 water bottles + cloth filter + coal + iodine
>flashlight + headlamp
>firesteel + lighter + lighter fluid + tinder
>compass
>shower flower + nail clippers + washing line
>2 knives & sheaths + combo pliers
>distress flares + mirror + whistle + monocular
>bivy bag + tarp + mosquito net
And I'm probably forgotting some.

Food consists of:
>dry sausages
>gingerbread
>couscous (vegetables & chicken) + semolina (cold water is enough to have it swell)
>dried soup
>trail mix: muesli + nuts + almonds + dried fruits
>tea (when fire is available)
Cookware consists of one steel plate and two steel cups.

I have this pack I got at Scheel's for $40.
It's pretty nice, I like the MOLLE for tying camp stuff to, if needed. Pockets are nice, and the zippers are high quality.
It's good size, can hold a lot, and is comfortable.
Overall a pretty nice pack, just turns me off a bit being called an "assault pack".
