I've noticed this too. It's mostly boomers who think this, but even some restaurants in my area that sell lake Erie pickerel, it's actually walleye. Pickerel are in the same family as pike and pike are not that great tasting.

They are more work than walleye to clean, but are actually about equivalent as table fare. Lake trout are superior.

I don't know what disgusting ass watersheds you pull your pike out of or how big the fish you keep are (I don't keep pike over 5 kilos), but I've never kept one and had it taste like anything but fine white flaky fish. Takes twice as long to clean as a walleye though, so there's a lot of people who repeat tales told to them by ancestors or mentors who were lazy scrubs.

I put a little bit of salt, a little bit of pepper, and grill them or sometimes dust them with cracker crumbs and pantry.

You're probably Canadian or European replying to an American. Their fish cuisine is a bit weird and some of them don't seem to wash their pikes. Pike slime tastest bad and taints the fillets.

Never tried pike, tried cleaning a couple pickerel once and instantly regretted it since I assumed it was going to be as easy as panfish, perch, or bass. Do you guys cook them whole or ground them up to make fishcakes?

Filet and either fry or grill. Only keep small ones (no more than 5lbs) if allowed, the pin bones will cook enough they won't jab you.

And yeah they're a pain, but they taste good. Probably my 4th favorite freshwater fish (first being brown trout, second crappie, third walleye).

pickerel? as in pike, esox lucius? cant be mistaken by any other known fish, but they seem to call walleye yellow pike or something even if its part of the perch family and doesnt even lool like a pike. much like when americans fish for "lake trout" but its actually charr.
pike is best in fishcakes by my experiense, but im in trout and charr land and anything else is seen as cat-food around here.

Canadians sometimes call walleye pickerel or yellow pike, they're not actually that closely related. Pickerel in the us usually refers to the little pike-looking fish that are common in the north east and rarely reach above 25"

I'd take a pike over a laker any day. Walleye and pike taste more or less the same but walleye are easier to clean and dont have the slimy skin that can ruin the meat. Burbot also have slimy skin and are notorious for tasting either really good or really bad and that depends on if you let the slime of their skin touch the meat or not.

I like lake trout a lot, but I'm not 100% I don't agree with you, but Lakers are not something I often catch (have to drive 4 hours to a lake trout lake), so I prize them for this reason.

Burbot are delicious, but I very seldom catch them, so I don't rank them.
