>>1631623>shoots animal in an area that takes a couple minutes to kill them>WAAH THEY RANIf you don't want runners, start spine/neck shooting things. I don't care if you use a fucking .338-378wby, the majority of hogs (or deer or bears or elk or whatever) will run at least some distance when heart-shot. DRT's are the rarity with that hit.
>then why shoot them there?Because it's a large target readily accessible from almost any direction you can shoot at the animal, that is also relatively unprotected by large bone masses, that also ruins a small percentage of the meat, while providing a relatively quick and relatively painless death.
>story timeA few years ago I was deer hunting on my farm. It was alt-methods season and I was using a shotgun and Brenneke slugs. I had a yearling doe give me a nice easy broadside at about 30yds, and I popped her right behind the elbow. She ran half a goddamn mile and died in a gulley. Entrance wound I could stick my thumb in without touching any side, exit wound about twice that size. Drag her out of it and gut her and the chest cavity is full of red slop, I'd pretty much vaporized both the heart and lungs. And she still made it half a damn mile with no heart, no aortic arch, no lungs, no pleural artery, no...anything. Animals are fast and can dump basically all their adrenaline at once and can on occasion keep going for a hell of a lot longer than they should be able to.
>counterpoint story timeLast year I shot an antelope in Wyoming. It was a middling buck but we were trying to get off the range before a storm hit. I was shooting over a boulder offhand in an awkward position, broke the shot at the wrong end of the wobble, and hit it in front of the shoulders, what should not have been a fatal hit. Yet it was DRT. Still can't figure out why, I was well in front of the heart and lungs.
