What are your favorites? What have you tried and been pleasantly surprised with? What would you recommend to others?

By lesser known, I'm talking about things that don't immediately come to mind when you think /out/ (so not north face, Patagucci, dead bird, Mountain Hardware, Lowa, Salomon, and so on).

Mountain Laurel Designs. Best tarps, tents, and back packs there are. All their packs are frameless though and their gear is 100% aimed at the lightweight crowd. I'm a huge fanboy for their stuff. I own, and have hiked 1000s of miles with my Burn, solomid, and monk tarp. I have one of their quilts as well but it doesn't get used as much as my other quilt.

I think Nunatak is a great company, they make really awesome puffys and sleeping bags. Their site is a little rough but they will make you almost anything you want. I have a synthetic puffy of theirs and it's perfect.

Not sure it counts as lesser known, but Decathlon is king for me. Clothes are litteraly the price you would pay for supermarket clothes, gear the same, everything is sound and simple, and near indestructible, and they are super accomodating on returns.
by the time you reach the limits of their gear, you should be good enough that the Salomon etc.. gear you need should be given to you through sponsorship, unless you like to be that over equipped casual

the casual normie is pretty much the target demographic of decathlon, so yes.
this being said, the gear is cheap solid and functionnal.
I'm pretty much decathlon head to toe, and I go one one 4 day hike every month or so, plus one or two 1-2 nighters. I also run trail, and my trail shoes double as summer hiking shoes. they're the cheapest decathlon trail runners, and I can't complain about them.
And to be fair, I don't mind out of shape normies in decathlon, but I cringe when I see some fat lard with $300 Salomon shoes to waddle 50m from his car

Loco Libre Gear for quilts / sleeping bags. They basically shit all over everyone else. Small cottage company, don't buy that stupid enlightened equipment quilt, it's poorly designed. Don't listen to all the faggots on Youtube marketing the hell out of it, do yourself a favor and get a Loco Libre ghost pepper.

You have ALL the options under the sun to customize your quilt. Stitching color, the color of the bag inside and out, the materials, the down, the quality of the down, if you want a closed foot box for your feet or a regular shit quilt where it's just a big fucking blanket, literally everything.

It's just....be prepared for a 8 week wait time for them to make it. Well worth it though.
