Who traps here?

I’m just getting my traps dyed and waxed to get ready for the season. Went out and gathered about forty pounds of black walnuts to make dye today and spent the rest husking and at the stove.

What sets do you use? What do you target? How do you dispatch your catch?

You don’t really understand trapping, either. There’s not any suffering when you do it right.

I’ve even caught myself in my own traps a couple times. It stings a little, but even if it’s just a finger in the trap there’s no damage.

It’ll startle them, sure, but they settle down fine after a little while.

Not him, but both types of traps in the OP can take feet. It just depends on how the animal reacts. I've had several raccoons with broken feet from the coon cuffs. One was only a few moments from tearing the rest of the skin off, which was all that was left holding it there. None of them had yet to start chewing or anything. It was just the force of the trap and the wrenching they were doing on it, despite having enough chain to prevent levering.

Is trapping MORE of a historical and cultural heritage ANYWHERE in the US more than the Northeast?

Maybe the Rockies, some people might argue. Montana not only permits footholds, they allow SNARES.

Any foothold trap that causes damage to the animal was improperly set or the wrong trap for the target.

Partially true. Even when correctly set, they can still cause problems. They are not perfect and animals can do some crazy things. Maybe about 1 in 14 raccoons will break their leg in a coon cuff trap for whatever reason. One time a raccoon got its NUTS caught in a steel jaw trap meant for foxes.

Conservation? Much the same. Especially with the way wildlife regularly encroaches on highly populated areas and causes trouble.

It’s next to impossible to catch some animals in cage traps, snares are even worse than legholds, lethal traps aren’t any better, what do you want?

Minks are caught in drowning sets anyway - you rarely catch them on land. Not on purpose, anyway.

And there's nothing torturous about a leghold trap. Trappers get themselves caught in their traps all the time - and a finger is a lot more fragile than an animal's leg.

Any cruelty in the trap itself is from someone using an improperly rigged snare, or an illegal trap.

There are also lethal traps, instead of the gun other posters have mentioned. Trapping a beaver or mink or muskrat underwater, conibear traps, I think a few places still allow lethal snares.

Maine requires you to be armed ‘appropriately to dispatch your catch’, since you can trap things in Maine that would probably manage to get out of the trap and kill you before you could put it down with a .22.

Legholds allows me to be selective. I'm forbidden from setting bodygrips on land since they do not discriminate in what they kill. Legally I have to check a leghold every 24 hours, I check every 12 unless it's a drowning set.

Only in hick states, here in Vermont we have to buy a robot from Boston dynamics or a simular vendor. They need to be bx97 or newer to be able to identify the animal and decide to release it or butt fuck it to death.

Almost no other way to get muskrats or beaver. Mink at least will sometimes fall for baits on land, but muskies and beaver are right assholes.

So you grab them underwater and that's that.
