Localisation/gps
Very useful to me. You download maps, fist 5 are free, then you pay.
You then dowload gpx files (gps format for those who don't know) that appear as a trail on you map. You can use navigation to track your mileage, your speed. Personally I don't use this feature to save battery. You can just geo localise yourself now and then to make sure you are not veering off track. The app work regrdless of coverage (coverage depends on the ground antenna network, geoloc depends on the satellites, two separate networks) so you can use it with you phone on airplane mode too save battery.
The UI is not 100% instictive, so expect some thinkering and trial and error when you start.

Outdoor tracks and community
Great source of gpx files, you pick your poison (bike, hike, climbing, trail running, etc..) and users submit their tracks which you can dowload as gpax files.
I mostly use the website, but there is an app, which also has a nigation feature, similar to osmand

Just found it on a hiking blog, pretty good, you can search by town, and up to 14 days forecast, pretty accurate, but lacks detail for my taste (you get temp, wind, and humidity a 00:00, 6:00, 12:00, 20:00)
desu I'd like to find something like Winguru, which is for watersports. It's very precise, data hour per hour, wind, rain, cloud cover, and very precise geographically, you can search for a specific beach) It' still a great ressource for hiking, providing you are on the cast, it only gives weather for spots along the coastline

Solid navigation app and a good website the allows you to manage different map layers, plan routes, all that jazz.
It works very well, I've used in a number of different countries. The app used to be a one off price but I think now it's a sub scription, so might be less worth it.

This seems like a good thread to ask this. I’d ask /g/ but they probably won’t respond because they’ll (perhaps rightly so) think I’m retarded. And this is my home board. Ok, how do I put my Yuru camp files into mp4 format with subtitles? I wanted to put them on my phone so I could watch while in a ferry lineup or whatever. I’m clueless with tech stuff.

there's no contradiction between being /out/and technology, you should still learn to navigate with a compass, but most of my hikes are fer from home, so I'll be carrying my phone no matter what, might as weel make use of it.
If you want to dress up in loden and leave the phone at home, knock yourself out, but get off your high horse about "go outside", learning to use a gps is also an /out/ skill, and not doing it doesn't make you any more of an outdoorsman. (actually it makes you less out, I've never met this anto tech posture in any one serious about outdoors, only in larpers who use the net for chan and suddenly refuse all technology when they decide to play woodsman)

Used for navigation

Caltopo has an interface similar to Google Maps, but utilizes US forest service and USGS maps, as well as satellite images, Google street maps, and a few other layers. These can be saved as geospatial PDFs and uploaded into your phone for on-trail navigation or printed in large formats.

It’s really handy for planning hiking routes, obviously. But it’s also great for finding directions to trail heads and exploring abandoned forest service roads.

There are lots of neat features, and even more with a subscription. I’ve found the free access to be adequate, but you are limited to printing 11x11 maps and not really large ones.

Mapy.cz has always been really good for me, even outside Czechia. The offline maps are very easy to use, the only thing I don't like is that there's no way to manually import a route, it's done by making an account and uploading to their cloud.
