Turns out I’m inheriting 40 acres in Missouri, the family wants me to start a farm on it and I’m very interested in doing so. I’ve invested some time read watching Missouri farming standards and what I can gather is that MO environment is optimal for cropping. MO’s top crops
include basedbeans/wheat/cotton
Please dump all necessary info you have related to starting a farm, self sufficiency, homesteading, etc.

Pretty much depends on how the land is applied, don't you think chief? Some endeavors are more profitable than others, right? 40 acres of ostrich/alpaca/mink ranch would have a higher yield than 40 acres of basedbeans, right? Maybe you're just stuck on using tractors to plow dirt.

MOfag here. Depending on where you are, as in proximity to a city, it might be worth it to look into operating a cheaper and smaller certified organic farm. Diversifying your crops and turning the land into basically some kind of homestead. You could provide high price products to city-dwelling yuppies at a fraction of the cost. Or, you could go deep into debt getting the necessary farm equipment to even start doing it the way you've described it. My family is all down in the southern part of the state and it sounds like a nightmare. You take out a loan at the beginning of the year to pay for everything, and hope the yield is enough to pay it off and cover some living expenses for next year. That's how I understand it anyway.

Grow what you want OP. Unless its things you are going to eat, it's not going to be self sustaining.

Some places are harvesting now and might be taking on temporary workers. It would be a good way to learn about farms before you jump in on something you have no clue about.

40 acres isn't nearly large enough to make a living as a farmer unless you're doing CBD/CBG hemp or some equivalent.
Assuming you go through the process of making that happen, you will need storage space for your crop and people to work the field, which can take hundreds of thousands of dollars for an initial investment.
Considering your have literally zero knowledge on how to run a farm, you should lease it out instead and collect a percentage of the crop sales. Maybe make a deal to work and learn from whoever utilizes your property so that you can decide whether or not you actually want to be a farmer.

People were handling 40 acres with just a mule. Machinery will be an investment, yes, but he doesn't need field hands for 40 acres.

It wouldn't be a bad idea for him to go somewhere to learn from experience,like you said, though. Even if he is decided, he still does have a lot to learn and a few years working someone else's farm will help him.

OP I grew up on an actual grain farm. Listen to me or you will lose your ass.

Rent your land out to another farmer for the first few years, with it stipulated in the contract that you will work for him to learn the ropes. Assuming you are a hard working young male most will be happy for the help although pay will be modest.

If you have no equipment you will need to meet with the bank, draw up a business plan and go from there. You would be looking at taking a loan in the high 6 figures depending on what you have and local prices. You will also need farm and crop insurance, which are costly.

All in all your best bet might be to just rent the land out. It's what I do. It allows me to live as a semi-NEET with 125 acres to play around on.

First thing I would do before deciding to rent out your land or go at it yourself is to talk to your local ag extension and get a soil survey which can help you decide what kind of crop or ranching activity is best suited to your soil type. Then you can decide whether to ranch or farm and of you want to rent or do it yourself.

Retailers usually have their own greenhouses, and they're sitting on over 100 years worth of inventory and actually destroying it or selling it for paper and other shit uses because they grow WAY more than they can sell without crashing the market.
