I have a ton of pairs of darn tough socks. They're made in Vermont and i usually don't get cold feet so I get the thinner ones attached, they're really great for not too chilly days between 40-20 degree F weather in proper boots. Merino Wool God tier

Yo, that’s not true at all. There’s a million grades and qualities of wool that make a serious difference in the quality and comfort of the clothing, even if the consumer generally never gets told.

Buy quality, pay attention to the product and if you can get testimonials then do.

There’s real shitty wool out there, and there’s amazingly good stuff, too. Half the time they’ll end up right next to each other on the shelf.

I really like the REI socks. I also find it crazy how the thickness of the socks can either make my feel feel comfy or not comfy. Im talking about hairline difference.
Also how do you try on socks before you buy them? Can you? Seriously, my feet and boots are sensitive to the socks. If I change for my slightly thicker insoles I change to the slightly thinner REI socks. etc.

Whats funny is I got 2 pairs and I found out they were the perfect fit with my boots. But since I changed the insole for my boots I now use another slightly thinner REI socks, and now I have to buy 1 or 2 more pairs of those.
But thats for my work boots, not sure which socks and which insoles I will use for my backpacking boots. Let alone I got to break those in soon.

I think mine are all mid weight hikers, some short, some long. I just started wearing my hiking boots to break in today (or yesterday or whatever). Before that I've been wearing them in a now worn slap out pair of Moab 2 hiking shoes that I got at the same time as the socks, soles held on in places with Gorilla Glue.

I only wear wool socks, I have about 8-10 pairs in rotation are any time, smartwools, darn tough, point 6, etc. I bought a 3 pack of Danish Endurance warm weather socks about 3 months the ago, I figure I've worn each pair 8-10 times, and there's already a hole in the toe of one of the pairs. They are not as tough as the others, I have some pairs of point6s that have been worn 4 or 5 times more than those and have no issues except they are getting thin. Best ones I've had that were discount brand instead of name brand were Sportsman's Guide, they held up decent.

These are amazing. Keep in mind that the "-50 below" thing is just a marketing trademark thing and not an actual temperature. They are so thick that you may need to wear them with shoes/boots that are slightly larger than you normally wear. They are great for sleeping in.

Ignorant statement, anon. Some are super fine and super warm. Others are prickly and not as warm for the same thickness. The more expensive stuff also tends to not wear out as quickly. The really cheap stuff is basically shoddy(the textile term) and will come apart fairly quickly in comparison.

Wool blankets
if it isnt too cold but not too warm, I'll just throw one over me.

Shit last weekend one came in handy when I had a problem with my car and had to camp overnight with no prep. Just my emergency wool blanket was plenty.

They're OK, bought that exact pack last year. The heel/toe padding is very exaggerated which I don't like and makes them a little overly hot for me, but other than that they've held up well and work fine for winter use. Varusteleka sarma shit is great though, id say check that out first. The boot socks posted earlier are pretty good, but the regular black merinos are awesome for general use. Avoid the no show ones like the plague, no clue what they were thinking.

i just recently bought some alpaca socks while on the road for work. they're kind of a dress sock weight I guess but I'll be damned if they aren't excellent at keeping my feet at an even temperature. Better than wool blend socks at 4 times the thickness. I believe alpaca is a hollow fiber which makes it a better insulator. I had gotten interested in mohair and other goat fibers like cashmere for similar reasons a couple years back. love that paca. what I'd really love to try is something from qiviut though.

I have the non-hooded version of this. It seems discontinued. Their socks aren't good for cold but everything else is pretty much gold somehow. I recommend their Kenai jacket. I had it zipped 3/4 down the last 2 Detroit winters and the armpit zips open, too. Kenai is not wool though so this post is half relevant.

I've got a pair of sealskinz waterproof socks with merino on the inside, they're nice. I don't wear them often, but since i do all my hiking in vivobarefoot trail runners, it's nice to be able to put waterproof socks on so my feet stay nice and warm and dry. Have worn them in deep snow and while my shoes were soaked all day, my feet were lovely and warm and dry. I highly recommend getting a pair, they're not expensive either. I usually carry them in my bag and throw them on over the top of my normal wool socks if i know my feet are gonna get wet.

I do cycle hikes (usually 100k cycling plus hiking) so I do a bunch of thin layers of mostly merino wool.

Brands:

>Icebreaker

2 pairs of socks in case one gets wet. Polyester or merino baselayer with merino midlayer and merino top layer and/or waterproof shell. Merino hat and cycling gloves with heavy spare pair. Looking into merino tights, but haven't copped yet.

They go on sale almost all the time shop around. Most places have a 10-15% off if you buy 3 or more. They also have them on drop(massdrop) for about $14 a pair, but they tend to be 3 packs. They're awesome return policy is what got me on board. As long as the company stays in business you pretty much have socks that will last a life time. They're comfy and are pretty awesome for hiking

Yes. But I've only had one pair of Smartwools that ran small and to be fair, I bought over 10 pairs of returned Smartwools and Darn Toughs for $2/pr at the last garage sale! I gave pairs away for gifts! Mind these all looked unworn.

Whatever the Pendleton Easy Care (i think that's what it's called) wool blanket is. Get it. I've only used that and a basic flannel sheet(just for layering purposes) for the last 3 years and I've been very happy. If I could have had a 'blanky' as a kid that followed me into adulthood it would have been it. It's thin and breathable to the point that it's usable for all but 2 summer months(unless you sleep with a ceiling fan on high like me). When I keep my house heat low to save a buck I might add another sheet but my thin flannel sheet and Pendleton wool are usually enough. Feels great against skin(at least face/neck/hands/arms/feet/leg as I don't sleep mostly naked). Not too scratchy and it's only gotten better with use and age. Won't ever disintegrate in the wash either. Got my twin sized for I think $105-115. Too heavy for hike/camping but when I occasionally car camp it makes things extra cozy. Nice to pull off the bed for use on the couch too. My mom had only ever experienced the cactus-needle hell of those dirt-cheap wool "blankets" and was surprised when she felt mine. I might buy a couple to give family as X-mas gifts
