Does this stuff actually work?
I have some that is about 10 years old but it does not seem to even slow them down.
Does off go bad?

I don't use that particular brand currently, but the one I use (Muskol) has 30% DEET and works for me. I used Off a few years ago and it worked as well as what I'm using now. I've accidentally spilled Muskol inside my backpack and it's eaten through the plastic lining in my backpack because DEET is a solvent of plastics. Maybe you could try spraying a bit of the Off onto some plastic to see if the DEET has degraded. Anyway, if you want some stuff that works even better than DEET, try permethrin spray or permethrin-treated clothing. (For leafs: 0.5% solutions for clothing are banned in Canada, but you can get 10% solutions from farmer/rancher supply stores and water it down yourself)

DEET dissolves certain plastics, and doesn't dissolve others. You've seen the pilot episode of Breaking Bad, right? Where the one guy tries dissolving a dead body in acid but doesn't buy the right kind of plastic tub so it eats through it. Same idea. The bug spray ate through my USB key and backpack, whichever plastic type those are.

Citronella has been used for a very long time.
The "all natural" alternatives may not work ass well as DEET, but I refuse to use anything with DEET after I used that shit to restore my headlights.
Seriously, it eats plastic.
Why would you put it on your skin?

Reminder that DDT was suppose to be the greatest bug repellent ever invented. They would spray it directly into kids faces.
Then the birth defects started to happen....

I had one that I stole from my mom a couple years ago, it smelled like sunscreen and I believe that was a natural one (or picaridin?) but I know it was something other than regular OFF DEET stuff.

Whatever it was, it seemed real close to the OFF when it came to keeping skeeters away, but it did better with the gnats and other bullshit bugs that swarm me in the Florida swamps.

This is based on a non-double blind unscientific study by me. Just saying that there may be a non-DEET that actually works.

Yes it works. Use the stronger stuff, Muskol. Mosquito season gets pretty bad here in northern Alberta if there's been a lot of rainfall. Its all muskeg (swamp) around here and this is the only shit that works. I have a bunch of aerosol cans that have been frozen repeatedly and it still seem a to work fine.
Just look the can in the eyes and give it a firm shake. Works every time.
