Hi, /an/, Coloradan here. I got a Nikon camera and I’m wondering what the good places to practice wildlife photography are. Especially this time of year. Pic related, phone pics I took at Estes Park golf course the other Sunday.

Hijacking the thread a bit - what do you guys use to do photography /out/?

My /out/ camera is a Fuji XT-3. If I’m backpacking I’ll usually bring the Fuji 35mm f/2, although I just got the new 16mm f/2.8 and might bring that out soon. If I don’t have to lug my shit around for days I also bring the Fuji 50-140mm f/2.8. All water resistant, which is nice for /out/ings. I have a Sirui carbon fiber tripod that weighs a bit under 2lb and can (barely) hold even the 50-140 steady. It even has a little hook to hang your backpack on to reduce shaking.

As for where I take photos, it’s just wherever I’m currently hiking/camping/whatever. I don’t explicitly seek out photo ops. I think if you do, it’s really hard to avoid famous places with Instagram losers.

If you like taking photos, I recommend spending a few hundred bucks on a few-years-old used mirrorless camera and used quality lens. Old cameras get cheap fast despite being pretty close to new cameras in image quality and stuff.

I’m just north of Denver and Cody, WY itself is less than eight hours away from me. It’s really not that far from anywhere in Colorado compared to the people who travel from around the world to visit Yellowstone.

I just use my old Canon AT-1 with the standard 50mm lens. Film photography is kinda expensive though. I tend to buy crappy expired film at thrift stores just for funsies. Sometimes it's fine, sometimes it's not.

Not an American but driving for 16 hrs just to take some pictures of deer is overkill in my book. Go to a park, throw some bread at the ducks or nuts at the squirrels. Save time and money.
