I use a Klean Kanteen, I forget what size, but it's just under a litre, IIRC. I have the normal plain black cap, but I put a carabiner through the hole which helps wedging the cap off if it's slick or I've got gloves on, etc.
It's been banged around a bit, so it can't stand up quite straight, but whatever. For longer hikes though, even a litre isn't too much... Then I bring a bigger, older Nalgene bottle, but I'd agree I don't like drinking out of it.
