The stand is to control your scent and get you out of their line of sight. Deer seldom are aware of what is going on at 10'+. It also gives a better angle for an ethical shot. Killing a deer in a manner in which the least amount of meat is damaged/spoiled and gets it to quickly die requires a fair amount of marksmanship. The higher elevation typically gives you a better shot opportunity.
The stand also gives you a better idea of what is coming in and from where due to improved visibility. Yes you can encounter deer walking through the woods. But doing that, then placing a shot in a 6" diameter circle behind the front leg is tough to do on reflex. It is not like the movies where they always hit thier target...It is alot harder than you think.
There is also a huge mental aspect of sitting in elevated chair for 8 hours and not moving.
