Backpacking/Camping in California Bread

Hello /out/, I'm planning on going camping for 3 days and 2 nights with 3 friends this December, and I was wondering if you knew any nice secluded places to camp/backpack in CA. Pic related is Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument, which I was thinking of going to, but I can't find much about it on the internet, although it looks gorgeous.

Ventana wilderness in Big Sur can be pretty quiet during the week. Decent hike to Sykes Hot Springs from Big Sur station should be quiet at that time of year and the hot springs are pretty epic along the bank of a river. Worth a look, but make sure u get a decent idea as it’s steep and hot springs are hard to find!

got about 90% burned up in the ranch fire last year. mendo n.f. is really nice, but bushwhacking tends to be brutal if you want to go offtrail, and there are tons of bears, with even more displaced ones due to the massive aforementioned ranch fire, so protect your food accordingly.

ah, thanks for the info. It looks like I'll be going to the lost coast then, but not before looking into some of what the other anons said about big sur being less crowded during winter, as its a priority that we can really be alone in nature.

Just moved across the country to socal for work. It's not too bad but people here are way more rural trash than I expected. The nature is pretty fantastic and it's all pretty close (except the nature reserve by my place burned down). I'm looking to try and hit up the larger mountains in the spring.

also I miss trees.

Doing the whole trail probably. The problem with this is that in order to escape the ridiculous shuttle fees, we were planning to have a parent of ours drive us up there(this is not as gay as normal bc we are 18). However, it’s a 6 hr drive(I just found this out) which is sort of brutal. Hopefully like another anon said Big Sur will be less populated and we can do some nice dispersed camping there because that’s a lot more feasible and we can drive down there ourselves and just do a loop.

Separate anon, but do any other Californians know some good places in San Diego county or the adjacent counties to go to for a day?
It's been rough for me lately and I'd rather just not see other people for a good chunk of time.

What's up bro?

Alpine has some good spots. San Marcos (where I live) has a couple good spots for a day hike. Anza borrego is cool, especially the oasis hike. Not a long hike, but cool visuals. Of course if you are bold there are other spots beyond the reach of normies to get to. Check out google earth. I don't think you are going to get much solitude when the weather is nice though. Go when it's raining and you will have the place to yourself.

Green Valley is especially cool for some light hiking camping. If you want real backpacking and hiking, the Sierra is the ticket.

Some places near there I've been are palomar mountain, daley ranch and Hellhole canyon. All three are beautiful and have some great day hikes.

Something to be aware of at the Lost Coast trail is permits, my buddy worked there for the BLM all summer and told me that they only allow a certain amount of permits to be issued each year, and more permits are issued in the summer than in the off season. If I recall correctly he also said they had already hit their cap of permits for this year, but don't quote me on this, call the office there to find out. However, if you want to just go camp there it's an amazing place to be, just be aware that the roads to and from campsites there get real gnarly especially if it's been raining.

you have about 3 months to decide where and when you're starting. but if you want to do the hst in peak season i'd recommend you get your request in within 5 minutes of them opening.
