What should I look for when picking a balaclava? I'm in the market for one for a trip I am taking to the South Pole soon. Ideally, I want one with a hinge so I can take the top off and have a face mask hybrid. Any recommendations, /out/?

Going with my brother and a friend. The whole expedition is 8 people. We plan to be there for roughly 25 days. What other info are you looking for? Temperatures are said to fluctuate from 20 to -60 degrees Fahrenheit

Get some kind of merino one, preferably a thicker one. I have one from varusteleka very comfy but might not do for south pole also I guess you can't go wrong with fleece.

I’m not paying for it. They also give us an assortment of clothing and gear but I wanted to pack a personal balaclava just in case I need it

working winters outdoors in -25°F +/- I have found that a thin silk/spandex balaclava works better for me.
i've tried the thicker ones but if your active and working, the thick ones become too hot, at least for me

i add a fleece neck gaiter and fleece, wool, whatever knit cap as needed and remove them periodically as they become too much during high activity
