Is snowshoeing a meme?

I just bought a pair of MSR snowshoes for cheap off craigslist cause it was too good a deal to pass up. What pants and boots should I wear to go snowshoeing? I assume a good wool base layer bottoms but what pants are best? Should I get snow paints? Do I even need waterproof pants if I just wear high gaiters?

I have some snow shoes, but it rarely gets deep enough here in NY to make them worthwhile. Also, it's fucking exhausting to go any distance in them. Definitely easier than just boots in deep snow though.

I think "more fun" is a personal preference thing, but I will say that I think on relatively flat ground, where you aren't running into branches or logs or whatnot constantly, XC skis are an easier, faster way to get around. If you're on a trail that's kept clear, skis are way better. Snowshoes may be better if you're wandering in the woods or going up hills. Then again, maybe the snow just doesn't get deep enough here to where you can just ski over top all the obstructions.

I live less than a 2hr drive of a place that gets over 200" of snow a year so there will be plenty of snow to test them. I'm just not sure what would be the best pants to go snowshoeing in? I assume it's exhausting and you're going to get sweaty but not sure what shell to wear for pants? any recommendations?

Are you some kind of city slicker son? The adirondacks get close 100+ inches of snow in some places and the catskills get decent snow too. Heck, you don't even have to go in the mountains, all of upstate NY gets a bunch of snow, even the parts WITHOUT mountains (especially anyting along the lakes)

Tall gaiters with whatever pants you normally hike in (like the OR Rocky Mountain High gaiters) or a snowpant, preferably goretex - it mainly depends on how deep and fluffy the snow is if you need a full pant, and if the trail is already broken out or not. An unbroken trail with fluffy snow will leave you sinking a foot into it, shuffling forward and getting snow up and down your pant legs so you’ll want snowpants. A broken out trail won’t have much flying snow at all so you could just wear gaiters. Trekking poles are helpful as well. You’ll want to wear waterproof proofs, preferably insulated ones.

I own some MSR ascend lightning snowshoes, and i think tout should go for cc skis. Snowshoes sucks for downhill, are slow and heavy, and not that fun. I use mine for winter hiking but not that much. Only good thing about them is that they are way cheaper than skis+ boots + skins.

I Wear my vertical windy spirit alpin goretex like pants that i can open on the side to vent during climb. They have integrated gaiters so it's cool. I have some gaiters too, but the pants are way radier to use.

I'm not near the mountains. I used to be in the finger lakes, and now I'm on the west edge of the state. Yeah, sometimes we get a lot of snow, but it seems like for the last several years it's just mud 90% of the winter. I think we had one week last winter where it would have been worth it to bust out the snowshoes. People sure love to whine about the lake-effect, but in the time I've lived here it sure hasn't been anything special. I guess it's supposed to be worse north of where I am though.

Those things are light and well thought out, but they're loud as hell and I just cannot take the sound of plastic slapping crusty snow over and over and over. I've got some metal and rubber ones that I like because they're quiet. Lack of elevators really isn't that much of a problem, did a 4000' ascent with them and wasn't even sore.

You're thinking of a different model. The lightning ascent is aluminum with vinyl decking. They're very quiet. The Revo and Evo models have plastic and it's annoying as fuck but they're awesome otherwise.

Not him, but I have those. They’re worth $300 if you do a lot of uphill and basically can replace using microspikes or crampons when crampons aren’t really necessary. Basically they’re great and worth it if you live in the northeast and hike the Adirondacks, greens, or whites. For deep snow on unpacked trails there’s better “floatier” options.

When I posted that >>1637793 I meant skis+skins are better for mountain use that snowshoes. For flat land, flat forest or dense forest you cant ski, snowshoes are better.

The MSR lightning ascend are the best snowshoes out there, good for technicals climbs, steep traverse, deep snow, icy snow, they are light, durable and most of all, they fit with snowboard boots. But I think splitboard or cc skis are better when you want to go ski downhill.

And steep downhill in snowshoes really sucks

We just got them in at my shop. They're very secure and for a size 12 with large winter or mountain boots they fit. Much larger than that and I'd hesitate. The new binding is super comfy and secure but I prefer the previous system of redundant straps. This new system just is not as rugged.

The only issue with the old binding that I had was that if you make them too tight, you pinch the top of your foot and it hurts like the dickens

It sounds simple but it’s obvious you don’t own them because you don’t know they’re too tight until you start walking or it starts hurting. This isn’t an uncommon complaint with these snowshoes, which I imagine is part of the reason they changed them

That's a pic from when I bought them, about 4 years ago. But I didn't use them very much, only about 40km. I live in a city and most of the time I go in the Alps, it's for snowboarding.

When /out/ing on snow, I like to imagine a trade off between:

- wilderness experience

Snowshoes have, by far, the most wilderness experience for the least amount of skill and gear cost. The shoes aren't expensive. You already know how to walk. Yet you can be straight out into a desolate forest surrounded by snowy pines and breathtaking views.

That said, I prefer ski touring (highest cost and highest skill), because it's less exerting (lifting those snowshoes over and over is actually quite tiring) and goes waaay faster on the way down. But snowshoeing was my gateway drug from piste skiing (lower cost, lower skill, no wilderness experience) into ski touring.

As for clothing, you'll get very warm when walking, so don't wear too much, especially on your legs. Unless you're walking in a blizzard at flash-freeze temperatures, shell pants will be just fine. Gaiters are good if your boots aren't high. I wear my regular hiking boots (sprayed with a waterproofing spray). I've seen guys with hardshell alpinist boots but that seems like such overkill.

I've only been snowshoeing once and it was seriously not a fun experience. Maybe the snow conditions weren't right or I just had no idea what I was doing but it was generally just really difficult and unrewarding

Do you find walking difficult and unrewarding? I can’t imagine what you’d find hard about it, unless you’re just talking about the physical exertion of walking through deep snow in snow shoes

Well yes, you’re still going to sink a bit no matter what - they’re not magical. Larger snowshoes can mitigate that, but they’re clumsier to walk in. If the snow is 3’ of untracked snow, and you’re only sinking 6-8”, I’d say you’re doing pretty good.

This. I hike and snowshoe almost exclusively in the rockies. I can't imagine how people can justify fucking skis when you need to haul them on top of your car or buy and truck, anx are basically stuck on a track the whole time. Most people here wear winter boots, and carry a pack w snowshoes and ice spikes attached by a carbiner. You simply switch it up as you go and the terrain changes. Skis are almosy fucking useless.

depends on the model. There are some you can use like tour skis with skins or even with hiking boots. They seem like the ideal thing desu

My very first hike was 2 days snowshoeing in the Alps with backpack. I had no idea since I’m a hockey player so my hiking pals assumed I was fit as fuck but forgot that I have asthma too and that’s the very reason why I do ice hockey, I was blind and deaf for a few seconds and my lungs were in pain when we were on a steep hill. It’s very demanding on steep hills. However not even once I felt cold whenever I fell and I was wearing snowpants. No gaiters. Since it was my very first hike I used basic Decathlon waterproof hiking shoes and it was good enough.

Time for a stupid question.
I've picked up some cross country skis for virtually nothing and have decided to retrofit them to take snowshoe bindings.
I found this article about doing it but I am somehow too dumb to figure it out completely. Specifically how are the door hinges fitted and what do they do?
Any help would be appreciated.

Depends on what you mean by "steep" Skis will be fine for a lot of stuff and is a fun sport you can do either backwoods for peaceful serenity in a snowscape, or on groomed trails to meet qt3.14s
