I grew up near the swamps in baton rouge and they have a certain beauty not found elsewhere. I enjoy the mountains much more.

I don't actually know where the word swamp comes from but it's not a scientific classification for a wetland. England did a damn good job of filling in most of their wetlands but they still exist. The terms you English folk are more used to are bogs and fens and those are types of wetlands and are terms even used in the US to name wetlands.

I do love swamps. They're incredibly unwelcoming, and all aspects of life are in turmoil at all times. Thriving life, violent death, growth and decomposition all happening at an accelerated rate. The hardship that comes with spending time in swamps is pretty restrictive, but sometimes it's worth exploring.

Swamps and low land rivers are by far more fun to kayak and canoe than white water, fast mountain streams. Also great fushing and hunting. Problem is swamps arent for pussies like most if /out/ that thinks car camping on the west coast is the epitome of /out/

You must not fly fush. Also there arent trout in the swamps that i have seen. My greatest fishing pleasure is gutting a few trout and throwing em on the fire no scaling needed.

Cause it's hard to walk/hike though it. Also hidden terrors from the deep. Swamp monsters etc.

I remember reading some book about bonobos in some African country, probably the congo, and at one point the main character had to walk through a remote swamp to escape civil war and remarks how all the fish you would occasionally see surface for a gulp of air aren't even officially scientifically classified. Always stuck with me and made me realize how alien swamps are to us.
