Is hammock camping the superior way to camp in the winter /out/?

>gets you off the ground and above all the snow
>no need for sleeping pads. just warm top quilt and underquilt.

What do you guys think? I'm in the PNW and I'm debating trying hammock camping this winter. Is it a meme? Am I bamboozling myself? or it really superior to ground hugging on the cold ground?

Personally I've never hammock camped due to the one main issue. You really need somewhere to hang up a hammock and I live in Scotland which unfortunately is either heavily forested or about as bare as a Savannah. However, everyone on /out/ who claims to use hammocks seem to love them and there's not a lot of people who seem to argue with them. I suppose they have their niche and they fit it well whereas tents also fit their niche well.

Spot on. I'm a hammock camper and if you find clear woods with appropriately spaced trees its very comfy, especially in rainy weather. But if there's no trees or if there's more than one of you finding a decent campsite becomes quite hard.

if you buy brand equipment you would come out at about the same price. Just weighted my chinese bug net hammock, all the ropes, pegs, tarp and underquilt and came out at 2.2kg. Combined cost less than $100 and when buying them i was only concerned with price and not weight.
On the tent side i have my nylon tent and klymmit ul pad that cost me about $350 and weight at 2.3kg. These were bought with mostly weight in mind.
So no, for solo camping you can get much lighter setup with hammocks for 3x less money (ignoring the quality), but if you are 2 people or more and share the shelter a tent easily wins if not by price but at least by weight.

If the weather turns ugly, its comfier to set up a tent than try to hike fast down to the nearest, small er trees that generally are shit to fasten you hammock with. The best place for using a hammock is a proper woods with taller and thiccer trees, so it's excellent in the lowlands. Nothing beats setting up your hammock near a lake on a warm springday, reading a nice book and take a refreshing if somewhat cold bath later in the evening.

You don’t necessarily need trees. You can pass the ropes around a walking stick or anything rigid enough, and just block it through a crack in the rock, you just need to find a gap big enoug.
I like to carry hammock+tarp, I use a pad either way and in the 1/10 cases I can’t hang a hammock, I just go with a regular tarp shelter.
I would recommend carrying a second tarp or poncho though. It serves as a floor mat, and when you sleep, you can fold it over your rucksack, as the tarp over a hammoc is higher, your gear is exposed to rain if there is wind

Hey anon, I don’t really know much about hammocks but my forte is in tarp shelters over long distances, like two week minimum. Don’t get to go often but extended trips have taught me a thing or two about tarps, and just telling you BRING A WALKING STICK. Them shits are useful as hell given the right application. Good for poking embers, crossing rivers and mostly use mine as impromptu lashing post by spearing it into the ground.

Wouldn't say superior but on par. It has it upsides.

Clearing off the ground is a major one in snow or rocky terrain/slopes. But you expose yourself to cold butt syndrome. So you need a pretty decent UQ and TQ.

In my expierence I am usually setup faster with a tarp/pad ground setup than the hammock guys since they need trees.

A decent insolate pad helps with the cold ground aswell.

All in all I'd say it's personal preference.

Sea to Summit sells an ultralight hammock-tarp-straps combo that weighs 330 + 220 + 77 grams (22 oz)
If you want the bug net, that's an extra 380g (13 oz) but of course in Winter you probably don't need that.

So 627g (22 oz) is a pretty good deal. Only ultralight dyneema tents can compete with this.
If you factor in that for good winter camping in a tent you'll need a well insulated sleeping mat (either a bulky foam pad or a very expensive and heavy inflatable à la Thermarest X-therm), I think the underquilt and sleeping pad practically cancel each other out.

Asym hammocks are designed spesifically with the diagonal lay in mind so you have more space in it.
Last time I said that you really need to learn how to set a hammock properly, people got mad and started calling me retarded, but absolutely everyone I’ve ever talked to irl about camping in a hammock told me that they had issues with falling asleep and general discomfort.
It took me probably 4-5 nights untill I got a full nights sleep in one of these things, but now I can sleep 10-12 hours in one while tossing and turning all the time like I usually do.

Asymmetrical hammocks (supposedly invented by south American natives) provide space for you to turn your body so your shoulders are on one side of the line of tension and your feet are on the other. I would emphasize that it takes a LOT of getting used to. I feel like most people shill for Hennessy just because they want to justify having bought a $230 hammock. I'm happy to own one and it is very useful in certain situations but I still prefer tents.

Hammock camped this weekend in 20 degree weather with a bubba-rigged set up, was noticeably warmer than in my tent the next night.

The set up: Eno single-nest hammock, tarp hung 3 feet above with corners staked to ground, moving blanket on bottom of hammock (fuck paying $100 for an underquilt.), thermarest on blanket, 0 degree bag with fleece liner. That was the whole set up. I wore a hat to keep my head warm, but ended up having to drawstring my bag closed around my head to keep my face warm. The cold wasn't really the problem so much as wind blowing over my face. Would do it again.

Tried it once, also PNW. Was an absolute bitch every time I had to get up to pee. I tend to solo camp so a bivy with some insulation from the ground works well even with snowfall. Personally wouldn't recommend the hammock meme but to each their own.

Lmao, I have been camping in a hammock in early November, with no issues at all. Underquilt? No, just a good exped-mat, warm sleepingbag and warm clothes. Temps right above freezing at night. Underquilts are great when below freezing.

Don't people understand that an underquilt is a direct substitute for the sleeping pad? You can use either but an underquilt is usually more convenient and lighter for the equivalent insulation since it doesn't have to be weight bearing or airproof.

I never experienced waking up to pee in a hammock more than in a tent but the one thing I find comfy is being able to lean to a side and pee out of my hammock without having to get up or get cold, then falling asleep again.

You can do that with pretty much any hammock that has mosquito netting, the only real difference would be whether or not it's waterproofed to deal with ground moisture, but a can of scotchguard could make that happen.

Won't be joining hammock gang for a while but until then I'm just tryna figure out what would be best. Both are about the same price. Condensation seems like an OK tradeoff for having the waterproof bottom, since I think I'd use it on the ground just as often as I'd use it inna tree, due to the notrees landscape of the UK

i have three ruptured discs in my back and hunching over setting up a tent and having to get in and out was a nightmare and threw out my back a few times leading to very painful and slow hikes out of the back country, i was about to call it quits.
then i got a hammock. the tarp is awesome first because i can set it up high and stand straigh up under it never having to hunch over and secondly if its raining you can have your tarp up in 60 seconds and do the rest of your setup and camp chores in a dry area, again standing up. sleeping in the hammock is comfy as fuck and i wake up in the same position i fall asleep in well rested, back feels great. breaks down in seconds.

Best thing to do is see if one of your friends has one and is willing to let you borrow it to try it out, you'll know pretty quick then if it's for you or not, set it up at home and figure out a comfortable lay for yourself and you'll probably never want to sleep on the ground if there's trees available. The main benefit to a hammock is being able to get the same consistent sleep setup almost anywhere and not having to deal with clearing rocks and brush to set up camp.

Depends where you are. I'll answer for where I am: No.

It doesn't snow much here, it's relatively easy to find a flat spot because of the many farm fields and because I'm in Britain there's shit all trees most of the time. Main issue would be wet ground, that's really the only reason I can see to have a hammock here is if it rains super heavy and you can't find an area that isn't waterlogged.

Then again I'm thinking of going to the Polish Tatras next year over summer with my girlfriend and brother so maybe I'll give it a go there.

But unless you want to go full cocoon, you definitely want to get an underquilt, pads suck in hammocks and compressing your sleeping bag in a hammock without adding insulation could be literal suicide in the winter, especially along the pass where lakes fucking freeze at night.

All in all though, I love my cocoon hammock. Very light, very warm, very comfy. And unlike most tents, hammocks being modular means you can use a rainfly, bugnet, either, both or neither. And there's just something absolutely magical about waking up to an unimpeded view of the sky and surroundings as the sun warms you up in the morning.

I plan for this, lol. I put a flat level rock on the uphill side of my hammock and make sure the downhill side is clear for at least five feet. First thing in the morning, make some coffee, take a piss, smoke a cigarette, and then drag my ass out of bed.

A good hammock set up weighs and costs similar to a good tent set up. Comfort is arguably better but if you go up above the tree line, inna desert, or similar, you have no choice.

I've tipped down to about - 29c/-20f, I use a hammock gear incubator with extra down, it weighs <2lbs, a sleeping bag liner (literally just the liner no bag) and blanket. I am wearing decent thermal underwear and I'm a bit of a fan of the cold tho. My friends were dying.

The biggest problems in suber cold hammock camping are
Wind across your face/just exposure to the air, not much of a problem, just cover it right? Sure but at 1-2am you'll realized the blanket/shirt/rag is soaked from your breath condensing on it, which sucks.
Depending on your set up how to keep you feet warm, without adding a bunch of sock layers as that'll reduce blood flow and make them cold. I wear a single pair and bunch up the blanket.
Shifting underquilt, sometimes when moving in the hammock your quilt will move and you get chilly so you have to fix it, or find a way to fix it (in place). Ngl this is what is the hardest to get right when first getting and setting up an underquilt. Ensuring there's no air gaps and it seals around you. Definitely had my share of cold nights before I managed to fully have it correct. Now I just clip it on and done.
It's not hard to hammock camp in the cold, but it does take a few rounds to set up properly.

I want to be able to continue with a normal 4 season, but its getting really hard to turn down the possibility of a hot tent and all its "dry things and be warm-ability"

Poorly. lol. I wear wool socks and a wool hat, and dry those over a fire, synthetics I carry several extra of.

Don't stick your head inside your sleeping bag. If you're bothered by the cold, get a ski mask, preferably wool, so you can dry it over the fire.

This is pretty situational. Was it only dying because of the cold? Then the fire needs to be built with larger logs closer together so the heat builds up. Was is because the wood was damp? Then you need to build large tepee style stick fires, so that the damp wood on the outside is drying while the wood in the middle is burning. It's an insane little balancing act of adding wet wood and removing smoldering wood to keep the fire at the right size, but it works.

This is only my opinion, but in the spring and autumn, camping should be packing light, traveling fast and seeing everything life has to offer. In summer and winter, camping is more about taking it easy, staying out of the harsh weather and enjoying the scenery. So I think you should get yourself a nice waxed canvas tent, wood stove, some warm clothes, and just hang out, drink cocoa with peppermint schnapps and wait for dinner to walk by. You've got all spring to knock out that thru-hike, winter is about calorie conservation.
