Silvas arrow is much more stable and points to north at an instant while mine takes 2-4 seconds to settle. Brand ones are definitely an upgrade but if you are not in some expedition where your life depends on it a cheap chink one is fine.

semi-permanent magnetic declination mark can be drawn by a marker or file into a groove for instance.

heres some more hint. straightedge of the baseplate is actually straight, even when viewed tangentially. and you only need the mirror to see the capsule. just be careful with the parallax

I't's not a joke when you're riding your bike and you take a shortcut through the cemetery at night and you get confused because all the roads and paths curve back on each other and it's cloudy so you can't see Polaris and there's trees all around the perimeter so you can't see any outside landmarks and you have to ride around for 15 minutes until you find an exit.

I have the Suunto MC2. Do a freeze test first because some of their compasses are notorious for sticking. Place compass in freezer and remove and check for free movement of the needle.
