how do you avoid crowds when going /out/ in california? I just got back from joshua tree and it was unbelievably crowded. luckily i started hiking early because on my way back out of the trail i probably passed at least 50 people.

There's the secret.
Or just spend time on Google earth looking for cool terrain with few or no trails. Yes the world today feels small but in reality there's more outdoors out there than you can possibly fathom.
For national parks, research the obscure back ways into the park. There's always "that" parking spot that only the locals know about it. Often it's outside the park so you don't even have to pay for a pass.

I always start hikes at popular places at first light, I'm usually eating breakfast in the dark.
I did Vernal/Nevada Falls in Yosemite on a holiday weekend this way. Maybe a dozen started around when I did, got to enjoy decently long streches of trail and viewpoints to myself, and the top of both falls with only a handful of other people.
Then there were at least 1200 people, no exaggeration, coming up as I came back down.
Thats how you avoid crowds.
If you want Isolation in a NP, you have to go off-trail, otherwise its impossible and just something to put up with.
