Heading to catalonia (Spain) for some cats in June 2020. We went last year but the ebro was completely flooded and fucked with debris. We got some nice carp instead on a lake. Fantastic place to fish arguably the best in Europe when it's not flooded.

I mead mean some would argue 1'200 pound blue marlin put up the best fight because its literally wrangling an animal 4 times your size
Some would say tarpon or sailfish for their size and acrobatics
Some would day bluegill or similar for their fight per pound
Personally i cant say i have an oppinion on the best fish having not caught a ton of different species.
For ohio id have to say steelhead for their size, power, acrobatics, etc. For salt water, of what ive caught, spanish mackerel is a great power/weight ratio. I can only imagine what a king is like. Id also love to go after red drum and tarpon, too. Especially on a fly rod.

Pound for pound, a lot of the panfish fight real good for freshwater fish. Lots of large freshwater fish are somewhat lazy. Tropical fish seem to be more feisty too, the cichlids and snakeheads fight harder than any comparable natives.

Saltwater, I’m not sure. Pompano are quite a fun fight on medium tackle. Snook are supposed to be real good too but I never cared enough to fight with nigs over the good snook spot on a good snook night.

Smallmouth by far for freshwater. I've caught pike, steelhead, muskie, my god nothing fights like a river smallie. I'd take a one pound river smallie over a 2-3 pound steelhead any day. I'd take a 5 pound smallie over any other species of fish aside from a 50"+ muskie.

I brought a few mid 20" chromers in with 6lb test with only two runs. They're right up there but pound for pound and acrobatics smallies will always take it. I've seen smallies go three times their own length out of the water. You wonder why its possible. Steelies jump but not like smallies. The only exception is that once I caught a musky that immediately after hitting my bait leaped straight out of the air like a nuclear sub launching a missile. A 40-45 inch musky entirely out of the water. It was a memory I'll never forget.

Trout are good fighters don't get me wrong, but smallies take the cake in NE. Especially in spring. One of the more heartbreaking moments was fishing with my GF and a 5+ pound smallie leaped clear out of the water and head shook my bait right out of the water and it slingshot right back to me. Pic related is a nice smallie I got.

I'm partial to Rapala, but the fish probably care less than I do.

I catch more, bigger fish with Rapala, but I spend way more time fishing my Rapalas than I do my other lures, so any other result would be a surprise.

Nice, I'm waiting on these to arrive, have you handled and Palms Alexandra minnows? The craftsmanship is incredible, most manufacturers don't bother with belly swivels on full sized jerkbaits but they put one on a tiny ultralight.

Bought a 2wt 6'6" and a 1/2 reel. Turns out the rod has a seat for bigger reels for some reason, it runs out of thread before it locks the little reel down. Didn't want to deal with exchanging it, so I made a spacer out of a high brass 12 gauge shell and some silver solder.

I'll file down the solder and polish the marring off the brass at some point and it'll look really nice. For now it holds the reel like it was meant to be this way from the factory, and that's good enough for me.

This. I love fighting them even on ultralight gear. Once I tagged into a rogue steelhead while fishing the Clinton River for smallmouth and brownies, I immediately cried out "I got a smallie!" 30 seconds later it was an at least 4lb steelhead. Pic related kind of spot, but in september.

If you do hit the NC coast definitely get after them. There's a few good spots accessible by wading and the fall is the best time for reds and specks on flies and light tackle.

I figured, all the reputable reviewers I know share the same opinion. Even Abu Garcia's top of the line spinning reels haven't been very impressive.

Fly fishing bros help me out. What weight rod should I buy for small mouth bass and float tubing for pike/large mouth bass. The area I live in doesn't have many pike but there are some really deep former quarries that have them. I've caught some decent hammer handles on a five wt using barely legals and other large trout streamers but looking to fish larger streamers and sinking line to see whats lurking in the depths. Also looking to chase some small mouth bass in larger river when the trout bite dies in the summer. Was thinking about a 7 wt TFO mangrove but looking for suggestions.

A 7 or 8 weight will be just about perfect. Ive got a buddy who owns a 7 weight mangrove, he seems to like it. Personally i like 8 weights because those few extra grains really help with delivering big flies, and it will still have plenty of bend when you hook up.

I'd get a drop shot with one or two circle hooks to a small fluke (probably gulp or powerbait to add extra scent.) If you're on a boat I'd definitely find a 29-14 foot spot off a point on the lake and use jigging raps, rattle traps, or a small fluke on a jighead. Salted minnows will also work well if they're legal. Also if you can use 2 rods you can try a method I named "call and answer". I'm definitely not the first person to use the method so I can't say its mine. Anyway call and answer is where I get a small scented fluke on a small jig, and keep it right off the bottom. I keep my sonar honed in on that. Then on my other rod I take a noisy rattle trap and jig it until I see a mark on the sonar. Then I'll either jiggle the fluke rod, or just leave it as a dead stick and wait for a bite. That method is what helped me boat walleye and sauger in the toughest walleye fishing I've ever had in my life. Pic related. Sometimes if the bite is hot, they'll take the rattle bait. No matter what 95% of the walleye are gonna be 2 feet or less from the bottom. Keep that in mind.

Sink tip, probably not, but if ypu fish a lot of still water for them in the cold, you will need a heavy full sink. As for simple flies, hollow tied bucktail is hard to go wrong with. It moves water, and if you articulate it, all the better. Craft fur baitfish are good too. Pike bunnies are simple, too. Really any large streamer is ideal.

I can't reinforce this enough. If you're only targeting bass and deeper water fish def go with sink tip. Casting even with a higher rater rod with tons of weight to get deep sucks. Sink tips make a huge difference. Also, make you're own leaders and tippets, it's cheaper and more effective.

I use the Rio Versitip that has the variety of sink tips for most of my trout fishing needs and when I need to get deeper for lake bass. It really helps when throwing streamers or hitting a lake and you need more depth. I usually use my floating line for most situations but sometimes you just need something that sinks and I think it's better than using a bunch of split shot.

Are you chasing world record Muskies?

Regular pike 15 lb braid is fine with a leader. I've caught 48 inch Muskies on a Medium rod with 10 lb braid and a 20 lb floro leader.

I lose probably 5 lures a year to pike when I'm fishing for crappie or bass without a bite leader. When I'm targeting pike, I try to have at least a 25 lb floro leader, and often use a steel leader when trying to target bigger pike.

65 is considered too light for musky fishing. 65 is what a lot of people put on their frogging or heavy bass rods. Keep in mind that its not about the fish, its about the lures. I lost one too many muskie lures to ever go back to 30lb braid. Plus PP is super thin and its probably the same as 12-15 lbs mono. Believe me I fell into the same trap as you, you really gotta use the equivalent diameter braid, not the equivalent pound test.

My musky rod has 50 lb test, but I don't use my musky rod when I'm trying to catch a slot pike for eating, and I occasionally catch muskies while fishing for eater pike.

I put floro leaders on all my rods and wire leaders on if I'm trying to target large pike. I use spinning reels for basically everything (my musky rod has a Sedona 8000), so I don't need to worry about thin line cinching around my spool as much as a baitcaster fisherman.

Does anyone have any tricks for icefishing (when not using electronics)? Almost every time I go out on the ice I either catch 1 or 2 fish or come home completely skunked and its getting a little tiresome. I've also seen someone fishing next to me use a tip up setup (for northern pike) where you hook a large minnow and allow it to swim around freely (with no weights) but I'm not sure how I'm supposed to make that effective. He also caught 3 off this method within an hour.

Tip-up fishing for northerns is pretty simple, you find a flat with some weeds near a drop-off and you give the minnow not quite enough line to reach the weeds.

In MN you get two lines, so I like to set another hole about 10 feet from my tip-up an jig fish for panfish. The action from the panfish rod increases the odds of a pike coming in. If you've got a camera, set it where it can see your tip-up and your jigging rod, and if a pike comes in but doesn't immediately grab your tip-up, swap your panfish jigging rod for one with a shiner or a spoon.

Yeah tip ups are solid. You usually need live bait, keep them either a foot or two off the bottom, or if you really want to in late ice maybe 6 feet under the ice. Your best bet is to take a look at sonar charts and focus on steep drop offs, underwater reefs, points, etc. If you want you can make your own depth finder by wrapping some tipup line around a tin can with a weight on the bottom, and make a butterfly knot every two feet up to about 30 feet (unless you're targeting lakers, theres no need to go much deeper than that. Navionics is a great cellphone app, the free version is good enough to get an idea, but do the free trial for the full. I paid the 15 or 20 bucks and I use it often. It uses your gps so you can tell where you are. Panfish will typically be in 10-20 foot of water, walleye 15-30. The best all around lure is the smallest swedish pimple you can get tipped with waxworms. (1 or 2). Let it down all the way to the bottom and try 3 methods
>1 lift up slowly 2 or 3 feet, then let down slightly faster than the lure would fall and pause for 5-10 seconds
> 2 slightly jiggle it in place for a couple seconds and let sit for a few seconds
>3 violent jigging followed by a few seconds of it sitting
Try different time lengths jigging and pausing. For all other than lakers and to an extent pike, you really should drill a hole, spend 15 minutes at it, if no fish or bites, try a different one. Stay mobile. Good luck

What's a good rod combo for striped bass? The striped bass where I live can go from anywhere from 5 pounds to 60 pounds.

I have 3 rod combos for largemouth bass I know that will suffice, but will a big FUCK YOU swimbait rod be good for those big fucking stripers? Itching to get a swimbait rod that will be used for both trophy bass hunting, using 6" huddleston's and also using it for stripers.

Bluegill will take you for a fucking ride on light tackle, and the fact that they’ll eat anything means that you will almost always have a fun and successful day of fishing with them. Pic related, two friends and I went fishing at a buddy’s pond the morning before graduation this last May. Spent about 3 hours there and pulled in a dozen of these little fighters. This particular one right here fought like an absolute champion. It was a beautiful morning, with nice fishing, and the whole world full of possibilities ahead of us. You can’t pay for that kind of experience.

Exactly. I have so much fun catching bluegill and yellow perch at the lake/pond on ultralight tackle. I use the same for trout in streams.
Considering I live in an urban area, ultralight is absolutely key to having the most fun with what's available.

I fish salt considerably but certain times of year the bite just isnt as hot for shore/wade fishing and I dont have my own boat so I'm at the mercy of my friends that do. Pond hopping or fishing this small blackwater creek for different panfish with my fly rods are how I fill that gap.

I’m visiting family in Northeast Florida for the next two weeks and want to try fishing here. The thing is, I only fly fish in coldwater rivers for trout with a fly rod. I can get access to salt water gear but I don’t know shit about fishing salt water or even for warm water fish. Can anyone get me pointed in the right direction? I have a friend who is going to go out with me for a day but he’s in dental school and doesn’t have a lot of time. Since you're only going there for 2 weeks (and not solely for fishing), I think the cheaper and easier route would be to use your current setup for bass and other freshwater fish. You'll still have a ton of fun, I assure you. Plenty of ponds and rivers to fish in.

Your usual bass flies will work. Woolly buggers, streamers, poppers, etc. Bring some panfish flies as well if you plan to explore small creeks.
If you want information more specific to the area you will be fishing in, then you'll have to ask local fly fishermen or a fly shop.
You'll only be there for two weeks so travel light. Enjoy your time with family!

Ideally you have an 8 weight. A floating line will do all your work, and you really only need basic streamers. Clouser minnows, decievers, and a popper or two wont hurt either. Id say use 0x tippet most if not all of the time.

You boomers don't get it. Tungsten is 4x more dense than lead. For 14 2xl hooks and larger you can wrap a ton of lead but for size 20+ midges tungsten beads make a big difference since lead messes up the profile.

Forgot the rest of my post. I agree with you but I spend roughly 85% of my time fishing Czech or French nymphing and tungsten makes it easier to stay in contact with the flies and you’re not forced to tuck cast for every presentation. I don’t always use tungsten beads but I tie the majority of my flies with them. Of course, I tie on mostly barbless jig hooks too so I’m sure you guys would think I’m a walking meme.

You keep saying 1/300th of an oz but realistically if something is 4x heavier it will sink my fly 4x faster regardless of the actual weight difference. If tungsten beads were a "meme" people like Lance Egan and other competitive fly fisherman wouldn't use them.

Depends on where you are and the time of year. I'm in central NC, and ive been smashing the crappie at night in 40ft deep water with no structure. The fish are suspended at 25ft chasing shad. I also rake them in at bridge pilelings at the same depths.
They seem to feed in stages, but I can snag the odd one now and again between feeding fenzies.

Drop-offs should be self explanatory, structure could be anything like a rock or brushpile, and transition lines are where gravely bottoms turn to mud and vice versa.
On those lines is where plant matter gathers and rots, and it's where aquatic bugs live. All fish like a rock nymph lure near that shit, and baitfish hang out there too so minnows are also good.

Brass beads barely reach the strike zone on a Czech drift if the water is deeper than four or five feet. Not exactly an ideal situation for euro nymphing but sometimes my rig is catching fish and I don’t want to change it to fish one run. Tungsten gets you down and in touch with your flies quick. With brass I usually use a drop rig which is a bit more of a pain to set up and more prone to tangling. I just think there’s a time and place for everything.

If you aren't using the smallest split shots you can find. (I rig mine about a foot up from my nymphs, then 2-3" apart from each other). It's cheaper than tungsten for a van dwellers that can barely afford mats to tie with.

Tbh if I had more money I'd only be buying tungsten beads, but I'm a poor fag so I use what I can get. I also fish so low to the bottom that I lose nymphs constantly (which is how you should be fishing). I'd blast through a bag of 20 easily, and I'm too poorfag for that.

I can't wait to get out west to fish rivers like the Taylor again, I'm so sick of east coast. Florida will be fun, but everything around me is too swampy to cast flys.

Its tightline nymphing with either no indicator or an inline indicator, with a very long leader and little to no fly line out of the rod. Jig flies are popular for it because they're heavy and ride hook point up.

Why are fly reels so expensive? I was contemplating buying a hydros sl since they are on sale but I was reading about it on a boomer forum and they said that you wouldn't believe what Orvis pays for them from China. Yeah you just gotta be somewhat creative when you dont always have access to a boat. I can get on a boat maybe twice a month so the rest of my fishing just varies with the season. Spanish and blues off the beach in the summer months and in the fall and early winter I do more wade fishing for specks, reds, and flounder. There's a few solid public fishing docks I hit when I wanna switch things up. Spring I go after shad when they move into freshwater and fish for bass and panfish on the fly.

The Orvis Battenkill series aren't terribly overpriced. But I strongly recommend that you check out Echo, they make some really great products at reasonable prices. I own an Echo Ion reel and love it.

I use the 1/32oz size to mindlessly catch panfish on a UL setup. If we're talking bass then yeah I'd use soft plastics on a Texas rig, shakeyhead, or drop shot all day long instead.

If I were to make a kit to survive in the woods I would have 1/32oz beetle spins in it because I could just eat multiple panfish every day caught off it, and I don't have to keep them alive like worms.

I need help.

The weather finally cooled down enough to plant rainbow trout in an urban pond nearby but no one can catch them consistently on anything but Power Bait.

Usually we just throw on a Panther Martin and slay them but nothing is working this year. My buddy got one on a Panther with a ridiculous amount of split shot, pretty sure it was dragging near the bottom. I hooked one that got away but for the amount of time we have spent out there we aren't doing it right.

I think they are hanging out near the bottom, 15' deep, and in the center of the pond about 50' from shore.

I've tried adding a barrel weight about 24" up from a few different spinners and retrieval methods including letting them sink before reeling in. I'm not sure if they are getting spooked from the weights hitting the water or are no longer interested once they see that lure sinking.

I've tried working jig heads across the bottom.

I've tried using a clear bubble with 6' of leader, tiny split shot and then a couple different nymphs and flies. Ideally they'd bounce off the bottom at 15' but I don't know how to get them that deep without them just dragging. Also, every other cast everything is a tangled mess when reeling back it back in.

There is about a 15 minute window when the sun is setting that they will actually rise and eat off the surface but won't hit the spinners. I'll try some top water flies then but I would like to be the first person up there to figure out catching them during the day.

tl;dr How can I target a picky trout 15' deep, 50' out?

I do not recommend a heater. the fish won't need to eat as long as the surface is completely frozen, and warming the water will artificially elevate their metabolism and thusly their oxygen consumption.

if the surface stays solid for over 2 weeks I'd recommend chopping a hole just to give them a touch of food. if they don't eat it they're good.
