Evidence of animal presence isn't the same as the animal posing a threat. Are you finding signs of being actively stalked?

There have been ~30 people killed by cougars in the past 100 years in the US, only one or two of those being fit adult males. Granted, your profession puts you at greater risk than the general populace, so having some kind of countermeasure (bear spray?) is prudent.
