Do you go /out/ alone or do you take a friend with you?

I haven't gone out since high school, and for some reason I'm getting the itch to go again... But I only ever went with Scouts when I was in elementary and with cadets in high school (who were pussies when it came to camping). Plus, winter's here already and I only have a summer tent and no stove.

What do you do to pass the time? Is it safe to go out alone? Any tips? Specifically, hope do you find a spot? I'm in Canada do there's snow everywhere in the winter.
