Some people just want to see how the world look outside of cities. There are beautiful vistas unlike anything you can find in cities, there are marvels to witness, and you won't fully experience it unless you go there. Pictures really don't do them any justice.
Some people want to see nature in its most basic form. You may enjoy technology and science, those things still rest on nature. It's actually kind of the problem with ecology right now, because no matter how many times you tell them the artic is melting and dolphins are dying, their own world is still working properly: TV works, gas at the pump, plenty food on the shelves at Walmart, everything is fine. Well, that's not how it works.
Some people want to escape comfort. No one denies how comfy life can be in the western world, but so much comfort ends up feeling dull. People just repeat how comfy they are, but they don't even know what they're talking about. Our lives lack contrast, and to realize how lucky you are, sometimes you need to suffer. When you've been walking the whole day and finally get to drink some tea in the evening, well, that tea is the most delicious beverage ever. And this is coming from someone who has a hundred bottles of great Champagnes and Crémants in his cave.
Some people want greater rewards. How disconnected does it feel to do something called "work", get awarded money for it, which somehow makes you elligible to get food that is completely disconnected from your work. You can hardly see the direct result of your work, and you end up living in a world you don't really belong to. When you need to get by yourself everything you need, to gather, hunt, fish, wash, skin, clean and prepare your food, to select, collect and filter the water you drink, to carry and set up your tent, to plan your route, it feels so much better, like you finally found a place where you belong, where your actions matter.
There is more to this world than you think there is.
