Satellite texting (which of course costs money) is a good way to let Mom you're OK (or alternatively, you friend with whom you left your route plan and with whom you check in every night to let them know you're on track). Your position is attached to every SMS so they see where you are. They can text you back, but you'll be charged for this.
However, texting time is not instantaneous. My friend texted me something and it took me 4 hours to receive it. No idea if this was unusual or standard.
The software and capabilities are pretty meh, there are better handheld GPSes on the market, but none with the satellite emergency and two-way texting capability.
Weather reports are nice in theory but I haven't really needed them yet.
All in all, I'd say buy, if you like spending time alone in the woods with poor cell reception. The day you need it you'll regret not having it.
