Yeah, seems there's so many knife reviewers doing knife destruction videos that use batonning specifically as a pass/fail test that knife companies have begun to make thicker blades that are tempered more like axe blades than knife blades. They don't hold an edge as well of course, but they can sorta pass batonning tests....sorta. People just abuse them harder until they fail of course then whine and the cycle begins again. Eventually, all knives will look like axes and froes.

I don't know anything about chinkshit blades and was speaking specifically about some American based companies. That was like 10 years ago too. Now we have hunks of sharpened metal. Like Ka-Bar brand for instance is up a quarter of an inch thick now for their hunting knives. They even advertise knives as "better chopping than axes or hatchets" on their own website. It is absurd.

You really only need a saw. A pocket knife will handle small kindling. But a dedicated knife like a mora is a huge convenience thing. Small axes require a stone. So your weight needs to be adjusted for that.

I can concur. I bought a Becker bk7 simply on the “ermagurd lerk! Its erndestructerble!” Guys on YouTube. That fucker was massive and felt ungodly unnatural to swing in an axe manner. It was eventually stolen along with several other things and I can’t say that I miss it. I’ve debated buying it again and remember it felt more like a thick spine sword than a knife. I don’t see how or why people would want something that thick.

Battening is the act of using battens (pieces of wood) to secure something. Like battening down the hatches or constructing something with battens, like a roof. A baton is a cylindrical club and batoning is beating something with that baton. In wood working a baton is only used for froes and gouges. The only places batoning with a knife is used is in glazing and sailing, but neither baton through wood.

"Brothers of Bushcraft" knife I got from Sportsmans Warehouse on sale.

Its thick. Not as sharp as I'd want a knife to be, but I guess its for hacking shit. I have a few other really nice knifes, but this one seemed pretty descent to take out innawoods and fuck things up with

Yeah.. when I go 'out'... I have a small cheap folding saw, a hatchet / carpenters axe (seriously need to sharpen the fucker), my sog seal pup, and usually my SAK that I always carry in my pocket... Literally ready for anything, and with the exception of the estwing hatchet, everythings light, and I have redundancy if something breaks.

My gf just got me the best fucking shovel in the world (pictured) that can be used for about 600 fucking things, so next /out/ing i'll take that fucker and put it into its paces

I've been tempted to thin down the hammer end of my estwing camper's axe to eliminate that sideways kick it gets when you're cutting deep into a "V" notch or flat with the trunk while limbing branches, It's a chopper not a splitter anyway so I don't think It'd negatively affect it's cutting ability too much.

Any normal non-gimmick hatchet will do the job very well. Use a camp saw for quick log cutting. The saw can be a folder or a bow/buck saw. A folder is good for small light jobs while a bow/buck saw is better for bigger heavier jobs.

Basically anything, but dont baton the knife diretly.

Rather than smacking the knife, use it to carve a wedge. Use the knife to chop a starting cut into the piece of wood you intend to split, remove the knife, and then baton the wedge you made through the wood.
