We've been changing our forest managment tactics and strategies to include this, albeit with the focus of the corporate goal for harvestable wood products and not forest diversity or old growth replenishment.

It's called the fire paradox. And yes. It sucks.

What you're missing though is Logging.
We (at least the province where I am a Forest Ranger) protect the woods because all of that shit is going to be toilet paper and 2x4s one day. Each tree has a dollar value and they take forever to grow.

Logging is a disturbance on the landscape. Just like fire.

There are some big differences, sure. But in the end the biomass is basically gone either way. At least with logging all that carbon is sequestered in houses and landfills and such. With fires you're throwing cargo ships worth of carbon into the atmosphere every day.

Would things probably be better if we let nature follow a natural fire cycle? Maybe in general. But only if you and the rest of civilization is willing to go without lumber and toilet paper for the next 100 years. And after that on tight rationing.

In other areas you are seeing more 'Modified Response'; meaning where the fire can burn safely they just let it burn. That's fine and dandy.

In the meantime the rest of us just need to hope that the forests can mature to harvesting age before they burn. And when they don't, that we can put them out quickly enough.

The complete emissions of burning even small amounts of leaves is ridiculously high. I could be wrong about that, but research for it shouldn't be too hard to find.
