There's a reason why we have game laws. And why most annual regulations have a whole page showing the difference between deer species. So fuckwits like OP don't shoot them.
Without those rules and their enforcement, hunting isn't sustainable.
So IMHO OP deserves to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, up to and including suspension of hunting privileges for a couple of years followed by having to take the hunter safety cours again, and demonstrate competence to a Warden.
Otherwise he's a poacher. And poachers fuck things up for the rest of us.
