I’m pretty sure Fuji is highly commercialized with maintained trails and supply routes/cafes stationed along the entire way. With that being said, it looks like it averages around 1000 feet per mile which isn’t too bad if you’re in moderate shape.

I never climbed a mountain until Fuji and I climbed Mt Fuji just fine. Legs felt like shit for a few days after but that's mostly because of the climb back down. It's very crowded. There will be a person 5 feet in front of you and 5 feet behind and legit restrooms and vending machines all the way up. Warm rooms every few hundred feet if you pay for them. Only real danger is climbing too quickly, just take an hour rest every few checkpoints to accumulate to the altitude.

Know that people do die climbing it. If you're prone to altitude sickness bring canned O2. If you feel light-headed take a breather.

Know that it gets cold as fuck at the top, even in summer. Even if there's no snow. Bring a jacket.

Know that There are little B&B's at various points on the trail up and at the top, but you typically need to reserve one in advance. (They're good if you want to watch the sunrise from the top, but don't want to climb for 8 straight hours). You can also buy a souvenir walking stick at one of the bottom stations, and then pay a few hundred yen at each station you hit on the way up to get your stick branded with a mark that says how high you are, including one you get at the top.

Know also to pack a couple meals, because even cheap snack foods are very pricey (and usually all that's available) at the top. This is because it's a pain in the ass to haul supplies up to the mountaintop.

When I was there in summer I wanted to go but didn't have time. What I learnt was that you should start from the base. There's a town you can reach by train. From there you go through an old pilgrimage trail. If you start in the morning, you'll get about 3/4ths the way to the peak before sunset at which point you should sleep in a cabin which are along the hikes and are free.

Bring lots of food, water, and money. There are rest stops all along the way up that sell food and water but it’s very expensive. You can sleep there but that also costs money (8000 yen for a night if I remember). There is also usually a 200 yen charge to use the bathroom.

The climb itself is not technically challenging, it’s just very long, so again bring lots of water. Bring warm clothes and you should be fine. If your lungs are weak then you might have trouble breathing past 10000 feet.

Also bring a walking stick because at every rest stop there is a guy who will brand your stick with a cool ass stamp.

Climbed Fuji in 2017 just a few days before the end of the climbing season (early Sept.) on a weekday.

Went with a bunch of friends, none of us had climbed a mountain before, took us around 5 hours up and 3 hours down.
Start early so you don't have to climb down in the dark. Up is fun, down is hell on your legs and boring as fuck.
Whether it was because it was a weekday or almost end of season, it was not as crowded as I have seen pictures of or claims of.
Wear layers. It's not really cold until you get to the 8th station and from there it gets colder fast.
Wear sunscreen. You will burn if you don't.
Bring 2L of water/pocari sweat, and some food.
Be aware your legs will not be in great shape for a few days after. Spend some time in Hakone or Kawaguchiko onsens and around the lakes the next day.
I saw a handful of young children and elderly persons summit the mountain. If you aren't some 400lb fuck in shorts you'll be fine.
