I did alot of lonboarding in college. Its a very efficient method of transportation. With a good board, it uses very little energy and you can go a very long distance with it. Under the right conditions, you could get more efficient travel than a mountain bike(which I prefer for other reasons)
The issue with a longboard is, you need certain conditions. Longboarding on unpaved ground is a bitch and will fuck up your soft wheels over time. You need pavement for a longboard to work like it should. If you're doing /out/ things, go for a mountain bike instead. It just has more utility and stability.
