>>1657760I'm looking at a bunch of shitty knives.
Hate to break it to y'all but they just don't make them like they used to.
Some of those are half tang or rats tail knives which are always unsuited to battoning, most look like over hardened production steel.
The reality now is that most knives are owned by LARPers whos only care is it coming sharp out of the box.
Also, almost all have been used to split sawn hardwood.
You baton green woods for bushcraft.
Dry woods are better smashed, and if you've got sawn hardwood I suspect you can carry a splitting wedge or hatchet.
The reason people get so buthurt about battoning is because it makes people realize that their knives are crap and they can't use them.
I've got steel that's a hundred years old and it's as black as Africa, hammer forged, lower carbon. Once I found the blade of a knife someone had hammered into a tree and probably couldnt get out, after a wedge was used to free it and a few Handle was fitted it fine.
I tap a knife with a spoon and I know if it's any good. I ain't a scientist but I just know.
If it rings like a bell it's trash, if it don't ring at all theres a problem with the fitting
