Sandy and poor draining don't seem to go hand-in-hand. Have you done a soil test to see what it's made up of?

You could spend time amending the soil, or skip that and instead build a raised bed and fill it with good growing medium.

Look up 'lasagna gardening' for one way to achieve that. Hügelkultur is another possible means if you're into something more long-term, but I'm guessing you're renting.

PS basic soil test is just dig a small amount and put it in a glass full of water. Shake it up, let it settle for a few hours, then look at the layers it settles into. Those layers tell you what portion of sand, clay, organic matter etc you have in there.

You can do it in a bunch of spots across the garden to see if it differs.

If they’re going to do that, they should do it in OPs yard. The plant life there will be greener and larger than comparative areas. Be warned, it’ll kill the grass to start. Then it’ll really take off at later stages...

Alternatively if you're patient, find some cover crops or crops that don't care about shit soil like okra and nasturtium.

Soil is like a plant, you have to work at growing it. Try to get as much organic matter as possible into there.

Based. when I get my own place my goal in the long run I'd love to have a bunch of drug plants. Datura, Brugmansia, Opium, Acacia. All of them. They are all legal to own as long as you aren't making drugs. I don't even care take drugs anymore it would just be neat. A few opium harvests every year would be pretty choice though I'll admit.

I made a 20 sq ft box garden (2 ft deep, so 40 cubic feet?) with FREE compost and still spent about $150 mixing my soil for it

Get some cover over the soil, stops the sun drying it out. Mix in manure and other compost to restore nutrients to the soil. Consider growing legumes to get some living roots in the soil.
