>need a long burning firefiretrench or long log fire
also, try to develop a feeling for how big your fire should be, it is a good practice to keep the fire as small as you need, when you are learning, try to make the fire, say,s one "step" smaller then you think you need and see how small you can get it
keep your firewood closeish to the fire itself to help pre dry it a bit, especially important in fall or winter, this also helps shield your fire from the wind
