What goes on here /out/wise?
I might be moving to the buffalo area for work and wondering way there is to explore. Boating looks fun in the summer but how about camping and treasure hunting the woods for cool shit

Don't listen to him. The woods are good shit and the /out/ culture is great. Not as good as mountainous areas maybe but there is a lot of land to explore. And boating is always good, even if youre just sitting in the sun enjoying the waves. It all depends on your attitude.

Fantastic hiking trails and vast expanses of uninhabited areas the further north you go. The fishing is great and the land is beautiful. Fun stuff to do all year around but you have to like cold weather. It's a good way to keep the coastal cancer away.

Yeah we might not have mountains but the Northwoods are absolutely beautiful. Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota all have top tier forests. If you ever get the chance head to the upper peninsula of Michigan.

Other than that it's a pretty good area.

/out/-wise there's a lot of boating and water sports, but you'll only be able to enjoy those during the summer months (shits way too cold in spring/fall and literally frozen in winter). If you're looking more innawoods shit there's plenty of great state and national forest lands in the area. A handful of major parks (Apostle Island, Isle Royale, Rock Island, and Voyageurs all come to mind).

Bear in mind that the amount of federal land is pretty limited, though a lot more public land exists on the state level.

Adirondacks are about 5hrs from Buffalo.

check out the southern tier area south of buffalo- some nice hills, parks (letchworth state park is kino) ski areas, some trout streams etc...

Also the niagara region on both sides of the border is pretty interesting as well..

Buffalo area native still live here. Iroquois wildlife reserve is a beautiful place. As well as genesee county park and Letchworth. Kayaking the Erie canal can be a lot of fun as well as local rivers.

There is absolutely nothing good close to Buffalo that I know of, then again I am a Syracuse native and I'm not totally familiar with the Buffalo area
Your best bets are the Adirondacks or Northern PA
Allegheny/Susquehannock/Tioga State Forests are absolutely top tier

lake superior is the only one worth a shit. the UP is great but the north shore's the best. great volcanic rock landscape near the shore with some amazing views. very clean water from lake superior. and if you go up near lutsen you have the sawtooth mountains which aren't really the tallest but they're good for skiing. blizzards on lake superior are a blast too until you've gotta clear your car out

Theres some great state parks in wester new york. Find a nice patch of woods and forage mushrooms. Its a chanterelle goldmine here. Fingerlakes are cool to do biking and gully crawls and fish. Lots of nice trout streams in the area too all along the Genesee river.

Check out the area between hemlock and canadice lake. ~70 years ago the city of rochester made them the fresh water reservoir of the city and tore down all of the development. Pretty deserted, and there's some abandoned buildings to urbex

I was actually off in my ~70 years, it was actually in 1895 when the development was taken down around them and Rochester pledged them to be forever wild. Only very small motor fishing boats and human powered canoes are allowed on them, absolutely wonderful area

The Adirondacks are 5hrs away but are the undisputed king of /out/ land here. I meet plenty of people from that area who camp over the weekend, plenty of places to camp for free too.
Other than that there's a lot of smaller parks like letchworth, chimney bluffs, etc. There's a few long distance trails that go through the state, like the north country trail. Finger lakes region has a few nice trails around it, and wineries are a bonus.
