Sup /out/ists.
Went for a ride/hike last night.

Got home from work, loaded up my big pack with 32 pounds of motorcycle tools, water, cameras/glass/accessories, hiking boots, radio, bear spray, gatorade, first aid equipment, and all the other crap I usually take along.

Topped off fuel, did a quick bolt-check on the bike, pulled on my gear/helmet and headed out. First ride with my new GPS!

Everything's dry. The bottom of the valleys that usually has some water in them was dry and sandy.

Then I see something in the meadow.
"Is that a..."
Then mama stood up. "Shit, that's a bear!"
Roll off the throttle, gear down and look around, keeping an eye on her... Little cub trots across the trail not 20 feet in front of me, and they dart off down the valley.

Been about two months since I've seen a bear. I see them every 4-6 weeks out here, but it's been a while since I've gone moto'n after work. Busy with other stuff.

Pulled off my gear, pulled on my hiking boots, secured my bike and headed up the mountain.

Picked up all my stuff and headed back down the trail.

Motorcycle gear isn't the best for hiking. I left my boots/vest/helmet at the bike, but kept my knee braces on. They're a lot more comfortable when i'm riding than when i'm hiking.

Another 1.4 miles back to the bike, alone, in the dark, half an hour till midnight.
I work with a bunch of cityiots. Set this pic as my desktop pic at the office this morning; everyone that asked me about the photo thought I was nuts.
Sidearm, bear spray, headlamp, flashlight, spare batteries, first aid gear, radio/phone, water... I can take care of myself. Life's no fun staying in your comfort zone.

Hooked up my intervalometer to the camera set up on a rock.

Got the focus set. Best way I've found to focus at night like this is to set the camera to single-point focus, lock it in the center of the frame, and use a bright flashlight to light up something with good contrast you can focus on. Once the camera's focused there with the light on, flip the camera to manual focus.

Gave myself a 2-minute delay timer, set for a single 60-second shot, hung the intervalometer on the rock with the light pointing up the trail. Hiked back up there, waited for the 3-second green light (telling the camera to AF, does nothing when you're in MF), then when the light went red indicating the shutter had been released I clicked on my headlamp and hiked down the trail.

You can see a bit of the red light against the rock in the extreme lower right of the frame. It's just a little tiny indicating LED, but when you leave the shutter open for that long with a big aperture, even little lights can light up a big area.

Yup, that's me. Not a whole lot of "extreme" moto guys on this board.

The Contour Roam I've got isn't a great camera... It's got their best optics in it, but it's still a small camera limited in its capabilities.
But the fact that it's small, waterproof, and fully autonomous means I can use it to get shots of things I never would have gotten otherwise. No way in hell could I have stopped, pulled out my Nikon, got it set up/dialed in, and taken a shot of that bear before the two ran off.

haha nice man! i would love to have seen some grizzlies out there! i have a canon for the stop-and-shoot stuff and a waterproof ATC9K for my action shots (which I usually mount to my front shocks). it works for my needs anyhow

and yeah it's just a standard Trek mountain bike, so not super knobby tires, but I use it on the street as well so it's kind of a compromise I guess. It's perfect for me.

some good stuff op. ive got a top case on my bike I usually lock up my riding gear in. hiking any distance in motorcycle boots sounds horrible. dunno if they have rack mounts like that for your bike. top cases look like crap but they are SO much more convenient.

There's a platform-rack that bolts up to the subframe... gives me a little more space on the tail to strap stuff down on... but to put a case big enough to hold a helmet would make the bike next to unrideable offroad.

I'd love to get a bigger adventure bike with some luggage on it for longer/weekend/multi-day rides, and not have to pack everything on my back.

About 45mins by moto from my garage.
I'm sure someone here can guess where it is. Pretty big landmark in the area for outdoorsy types.

Bike's got over 20,000 miles on it and still running great. Love it.

Long exposures delete motion. This is how photogs get that glassy-foggy surface of water or make people/cars disappear from popular touristy attractions.

Set the camera on a tripod, 12+ stop ND filter (They call it "black blass" because it's so dark you can't actually see through it. It's darker than a welding mask.) and hold the shutter open for a while.
I need to get a few more filters, both ND and ND-Grads. Have to decide if I want the screw-on type or the plate+holder type. Might get both.

Her'es a different crop of the same shot, with more of the rock in the frame. It's the same color as the one just behind it.

Think about pictures of fireworks.
Bright lights spray a ton of photons that the film or sensor picks up.
My headlamp is no different.

That effect can be had by either taking multiple exposures and stacking them, filling in light gaps in photoshop, or firing a strobe a few times over a single longer exposure. Lightning photography is fun.
