Just wondering if anyone here has any tips on living a homeless lifestyle/ subsisting outside of society. I've looked at /r homeless and it has some good info, just thought some people here would have some good information/anecdotes, especially about outdoors living.

It's a living hell.

Police hassle you. Showers and restrooms are impossible to find. Police hassle you. Assholes will either fuck with you or set your shit on fire. Fellow homeless people will mug you or try to rape you. Oh did I mention police hassle you?

Being homeless, especially in the USA, seems like a cute "freedom" fantasy to comfortable house dwelling idiots but in reality is a living nightmare you can't wake up from. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

A lot of this is part of why I do it in wilderness and small towns. I do not need "bathrooms", and there aren't city pigs to harass me or bums to rob me.

Yeah, that's what I do, I camp in wilderness and only go to small towns to sell art and resupply. I won't go anywhere near urban *anything*.

Presently I got a surprise temp gig staying with an elderly fellow who fractured his back. I'm using some of the pay from that to fill in a few needs I realized while on my last /out/ing.

Is this a good thread to ask how many people on this board are legitimately homeless? I won't disparage anyone here for their choices or the roads life made them walk, but I'm genuinely curious. How many of you genuinely chose homelessness and how many had no choice?

I have no idea about a "daily budget", I go long stretches without spending anything. I keep a food supply that's dirt cheap, and have fished thus far with an intent to move into trapping and hunting later.

Wheat noodles are $1 lb at Walmart. Then oats, peanut butter, and $5 per lb hemp protein off Amazon (Just Hemp is the brand). $8 gets about a 4 month supply of multivitamins.

Otherwise just whatever random snacks or additions I might pick up. Then catch fish.

I use a tarp/bivy.

How long have you been living in the woods for? Are you in the same spot permanently? Can you camp all year round? Do you have any supplemental income? What about cooking? Are you near civilization? Are you alone? What do you do in the Winter? How do you stay dry/clean your clothes? How do you maintain personal hygiene? Have you had any issues with land owners/the state?

Shiiiiit. Well, I spent the last 5 years living in a tent around my local county and in my ex wife's back yard. Then once my son went off to college I headed to the national forest up in the mountains.

I was planning to stay up there but an old (now former) friend was supposed to have some work for me but he flaked and I wound up back in home county and picked up a temp gig staying with an elderly fellow recovering from back fractures.

Whenever this ends I'll head back /out/. I make shitty little folk art paintings and sell them roadside/random spots.

Oh, didn't answer the other part. Well, that's a pretty complex thing. I intend on doing a series of vids covering it because it would be impossible to summarize in print without an entire book.

I'm 46 and the lead up spanned every bit of that, really. I greatly prefer observing trees, plants, rock, dirt, all manner of critters, the sky, all of it, to anything else though.

I mean, overtly and simply, I got divorced and am an old autist.

Hey I read your blog. You provide lots of great details. If I live outdoors, I'd bring less stuff. I'm trying to imagine what the bare essentials for outdoor life are. I'd want to be able to fit everything into a single backpack, or maybe a bicycle.

Well, that's going to significantly depend upon your personal comfort standards. You can look through my loadout (I think third article) and rule out things you wouldn't need.

When you get a good many days into it any extra comfort you have really starts counting! It's definitely possible to go with much less, but I'd hate to cut loose of anything else for now.

I reckon you'd probably want to experiment a bit and get a direct feel for it. I did have the benefit of 5 years previous to it camping near by, 3.5 of it right in my ex's back yard.

That helped me test out many aspects beforehand, but once you're really /out/ somewhere without access to lots of the usual comforts, the appreciation for whatever you do have grows quite a bit.

BTW, I *do* have a bit of that mentality. I consider my backpack to be an essentially separate, self contained load unto itself.

I do keep some things that go in it in a pannier for weight distribution while riding, but can quickly put those things into the pack and get by with just that if needed for whatever reason.

So, I consider everything other than what goes in the backpack to be extra comfort that's really nice to have.

why do homeless people stay in the city aside from fuelling their drug habits? Why not just go kick it in the outdoors, plenty to keep you going. Its bad here in Australia, the aborigines are everywhere, begging for money and drunkenly starting fights. There are places for them to go but they refuse and stay in the city until they wither away or die.
