Basically canals were built throughout Britain to haul frieght before railways. You could have one pack horse pulling 60 tonnes of cargo down a canal tow path, way more than you could ever put on a horse and cart. Railways killed them and they declined significantly; a lot got filled in and built over, more just turned into ditches. Lately there's been a big effort to restore the canals; they run through bits of countryside you just would not see any other way. A lot of people live on their boats on what's known as a "continuous cruising license", which basically means you can moor the boat up wherever you like but you can't stay more than two days before you have to move at least four miles. The boats move at walking pace - it's literally illegal to move fast enough to create a wash. Most liveaboard boats are heated with log burners, and moast boaters keep a chainsaw to move fallen trees and supply their own firewood. It's honestly comfy as fuck.

Oh, and the biggest boats are 72 feet long. That's the maximum length of a standard lock. Except on the Brecon Canal, where the longest you can have is a 60 foot boat.

Last time I spent two weeks on one was in February. It snowed and the canal froze, but honestly it was fine with the log burner going. Boat stayed toasty.

I got icebound on a tourist boat overnight. Was really no drama, I just gave it some revs off the bank to get moving and then went along slowly ice breaking. We're talking 20 tons of boat with thick steel hulls originally designed to take bulk freight. It went through inch thick ice with no problms at all. A few people caught up with us at our evening mooring and thanked us for breaking the ice and freeing their boats.

IIRC America actually does have some canals in Washington state and elsewhere, but they're not connected in a big network like in Britain. I could get from Littlehampton on the South coast and use the inland waterways to get as far as Ripon in North Yorshire. All the way at 4 miles per hour. Fuuuuuaaaaaarrrkk I'm going to do that when I retire.

The mississippi is heavily used for industry. You can of course travel it, but you'll be constantly getting out of the way of much larger craft. Also it has a very powerful current, and nothing around it is comfy like the British countryside. There's also the ICW and the Gulf ICW, but again it's mostly industrial traffic and ugly and shitty, at least in the Gulf part down near me. Just barges and refineries and other such mess.

Scotland and South Wales both have canals that have become disconnected from the main network over time. North Wales is still connected with the Llangollen Canal being connected to the Shropshire Union. Have a look at Poncysyllte Aqueduct.

Narrowboats won't handle the sea, but wide beam boats (i.e. Dutch barges) will. Bear in mind canals are not very deep, so a narrow boat might only have a 3' draft. They also have no keel. They're really not designed for use in strong current either; they're about moving steadily and efficiently on calm water. And I do mean efficient - there are 60 year old diesel engines on narrowboats that won't burn 15 gallons of fuel in two months of continuous daytime cruising.

I'm in, just made my lifelist as THE way to see Britain. I should like to backpack with UL camp gear and a folding kayak in a duffle, hitting canals in Scotland and Ireland as able. This will be in the next 10 yrs, hoping for no radical changes in the system to prevent my achieving this goal.

Also bumping one of the best /out/ threads since the guy who backpacked Iceland's back country... and that's been about 5-7 yrs (the old /out/). Thanks!

Not totally untrue but consider there's a canal through the Brecon Beacons national park, which is all hills. It doesn't need to be flat, but it helps to be able to follow contours.

What if I grabbed a canoe and tried some long distance travel using the canals?
Plan out a route, stealth camp along the way, lots of places to re supply, no need to bother with the locks just walk around them on land,
Thoughts on this?
Can Anyone experienced with canals or canoeing in general tell me why this wouldn't be as simple and easy as it sounds?
To me this sounds like the perfect way to spend a few weeks or something in summer
The only sketchy part could be the illegal camping but I'll be fine

Totally doable. Go on ebay and buy a British Waterways key so you can access water points and dumpsters. You don't even need to bother being stealthy with camping in most places.

Worth knowing that the inland waterways network of Britain does include some river navigations, some of which are tidal. Can still be done in a canoe, but you'd need to know what the tides were doing and make sure to be paddling while they're in your favour. Also, some of the river navigations have locks literally big enough for small container ships. Wouldn't want to get in one of those with a canoe.

Pike, carp, eel, lamprey. Even catfish. The canals are just shallow and the boats knock up all kinds of silt from the canal bed. It isn't drinkable - animals live in it, after all, and greywater is discharged from the boats into it - but it isn't particularly dirty either.

If I end up in the UK I'd like to get a liveaboard. I think it would probably be pretty reasonable if I pursue archaeology if I want, I'd be reasonably mobile. Continuous cruising would be a pain in the arse though, having to move an hour every couple of days.
