California is much, much larger, with over 125,000 sq miles of land more than Maine, warm weather due to the Pacific currents that bring warm water, and much, much more money pumped into tourism (and legalized weed) and schools, and that's not even touching on the railroad, Manifest Destiny, or other historical factors that have made those states what they are.
The differences between the two are as great as the differences between any two states can be. To select one quality and juxatpose it with one other quality and present the relationship between the two as cause and effect has got to be the most self-indulgent, shameless piece of cherrypicking I've ever seen.
Politics of racism aside, you should be ashamed to be spreading bad logic.
