Will I die if I wear a tight wool/acrylic sweater over my poly baselayer in my sleeping bag? 20° bag, below freezing temps

i have a three person tent and a tarp and cordage. the former is for /out/ with friends, the latter for /out/ alone. tarp life isnt for everyone though, while i cant give you advice on single person tent, at the very least you can get cheap tarp and cordage to try that once to see if it works for you

If the temps aren't too much below 20 then you'll be fine. You can layer clothes in your sleeping bag.

Raising the double tent.

1. Afix the ground cover mat with 8 picks. (Sardines - I'm from Quebec don't know wtf this is supposed to mean)
2. Mount the tent arms by inserting the ends into the triangular, plasticized, reinforced section.
3. Wrap the cords of the tarp to the 8 picks and stretch/tighten

Stake aren't worth trying to save too much weight on. You need to carry the right pegs and the right number of pegs for the conditions. Pegs aren't that heavy. However, you can save weight by carrying a mixture of pegs. My normal shelter for 3 season camping needs 8 pegs. 4 of them are critical so I just something like a full size groundhog, the other 4 are less critical so I use a titanium Shepard hook.
But when I'm somewhere with hard rocky ground in switch out for 4 beefy titanium nail pegs and 4 V pegs.

Thank you for not answering the question. I'm using groundhog mini clones that weigh about 0.3 oz apiece for the main lines. For the non-critical guyouts, I plan on using Zpacks shepherd hooks that each weigh 0.19 oz. I was just wondering if anyone had found anything lighter that still has a decent hold.

This was the point you retarded. Decent hold is relative to the conditions. You could use found items for non-critical guys if the conditions allowed adding zero weight to your pack. But to be honest looking for the lightest pegs possible is daft. You can get your base weight sub 7lb while carrying beefy pegs and without compromising one of the most important parts of your shelter.

Looks an awful lot like bobcat tracks. Canids usually (but not always) will leave claw marks with their tracks, whereas felines have retractable claws.

When the tracks are too old and those details are lost, also remember that cat tracks are very circular. Dog tracks are more ovular, and fox tracks are even more ovular than dogs.

Are there any reading lists for wilderness survival that may be useful? I remember a book that was a memoir or autobiography of someone who had spent years doing wilderness survival; but I've forgotten entirely, and I can't find the link saved anywhere.

I wouldn't carry olive oil, but the shakers themselves seem to be pretty durable. Just throw a strip of tape over the top and you're golden. That's what I've always done.

Imo tent sites should only be closed during high wind or heavy rain. Most of them time you can just leave them open.
To reduce condensation you need to vent your tent, camp somewhere with a breeze, and camp somewhere with a drier micro climate ie under tree cover. Go check out campsite selection. You want to avoid camping near bodies of water or in depressions in the land.
However, condensation is a fact of life and in certain situations can't be avoided. Safe you camping on grass under a cloudless sky when there's no breeze? You're going to get wet.
Carry something to wipe down your sleeping bag and tent. Give everything a good shake before packing up, and as soon as the conditions allow lay all your stuff out in the sun to dry.

take a course and study, ideally find someone near by who knows what they are doing. sadly bees can be hard to keep so having someone with experience who can preempt issues can prevent a lot of heart break.
My friends older brother used to win awards for his honey but lots his hives in a wild fire. It broke his heart and he could never bring himself to start keeping again.

I'm not aware of any classes offered in my area, but there is a man nearby who sells his own honey and start-up kits for people who want to beekeep. I got a powerbank that I can put on my bag and it will charge using the sun.
Now I kinda want a flashlight that can be charged using USB/Micro usb so I can drop the batteries from my bag when not in full bugout mode.

I had a small IT band issue a while back, just some mild pain now and then. Stretching/ foam rolling the area helped a lot. I'm pretty sure my issue was just tightness from lifting, so that may or may not be helpful to you though.

I have had a pretty serious bout with it since late Sept early Oct. While not yet convinced it won't return under similar conditions (hit me while on a semi strenuous up and down mountain hike during the downhills, got to where I could barely limp at all), I did a bunch of PT I found on YT and am presently doing daily 3.5 mile walks without issue. I also gave it a few weeks to heal without doing anything like hiking or cycling.

All the XL's i see at the store fit my hands well, but they leave a gap between the end of the glove and my interdigit folds. Is that normal? In theory I could do XXL but the stores don't stock them in house and I'm leaving in 2-3 days.

Thanks for the advice by the way. I'll narrow the search to a 4 man. In terms of food, I'm not sure; we're apparently not allowed any cooking stuff like stoves or flames, and there are definitely vendors there, but I don't want to be completely reliant on them, since it'd get expensive. I'm going to be camping with a friend and her group (my friends all kinda pulled out) so I might ask her what she's doing.

Yup. Inflatables are nice, but foam pads are just more reliable, you can always throw an extra blanket on top of the pad, too, since I'm guessing you won't be carrying stuff very far.

I bought myself a basic little tent (the french 2-person tent on varusteleka), sealed it all up with some silicone, it's nice and lovely and looks like it belongs in WW2. But now it's done its rain testing and it's wet all over, top and bottom and sides. Wiping it all down properly will take an ungodly amount of time, but I can't imagine that wrapping up a big piece of nylon that has water all over it in a tight pack is gonna be good for it.

This is the gear I currently have in it. Things like the big first aid kit and can be replaced with something else but I just needed to fill up the space. I have a simple foam sleeping mat and my sleeping bag is inside.
I know I'm missing essintials like a compass, fishing lines, light source, water container, water purifier like lifestraw and obviously food. Also a small tent but I haven't found one I like yet. But outside of that how could I improve it?

I feel like I have too many big items which doesn't allow space for smaller essential items, but at the same time things like the extra clothes feel necessary in this cold and wet climate. The pack is pretty big (40L) but I feel like I'm wasting a lot of the space. I still have space in the side pockets but don't know what to put there

It looks like it's in pretty good condition and the gear sounds good. The UV coating will be weak and the bulkhead might not seal correctly. For $100 that's a great find. Sounds like the guy was a sea kayaker and has decent stuff but the PFD is probably toast. The paddle is probably only appropriate for protected flat water. A free Farmer John is pretty damned sweet if you want to go out in Spring. Yakima components are expensive but the fit isn't universal depending on what it is.

It doesn't have padding, but that's no problem since the pack is so small you will rarely load it so heavy that you'd miss it. It will still add control and a bit of warmth on the back. 1000D Nylon and the Bergbuckle rule. Sometimes i miss an additional Pocket though.

How dumb would it be to have 2 cows on a 2 acre lot?
They would have most of the lot to graze if they wanted but I plan on giving them hay/grass or grain.

My plan is 2 female of pic related ankole-watusi breed to use for dairy.

When wanted, I would pay a stud fee and raise calves for 2 years before slaughter for beef. The interesting breed would attract customers who would otherwise go to a larger establishment if I wanted to sell product, watusi beef is actually pretty good and healthy for you.

They would also add the ultimate aesthetic to a small ranch

The location should be decent. They'res a shitload of cattle out here on pasture and everyone in the neighborhood grows shit and has animals.
I'm just wondering how badly 2 cows will fuck my ground up grazing even if I feed them and how much of a quality of life they'll have considering I dont have a barn. Is 2 acres enough space to keep them happy if I have some kind of shelter for winter?

I know of a couple with 4 cows on 1 acre in a different state but that seems a little cramped.

Given the rule of threes for water and food, you're over-prepared with food or under-prepared for water.

Consider adding a rain water storage system, they're easy to install and uninstall if you're renting. You have to boil or purify for drinking but it's a significant boost to your independent survival if shtf.

On a different note, rest yourself. Throw the breakers for your house and see how long you can go without restoring power. Shut off the incoming water and do the same. 'Grid down ' is pretty easy to drill for in small doses.

Yes. Clean them with a wet rag first, use an old toothbrush to get the dirt out of the stiching. Let them dry, maybe overnight. Apply mink oil with fingers or another bit of rag. Really work it into the seams/stitching. I usually put it on, let it sit for a while, then buff the boot with another clean cloth. Get all of the excess off or it will get funky.

How feasible is it to live out of my car on land I own? Basically, the plan is to buy some cheap ass land and park my car on it for one week at a time. Drive into town once a week for food/supplies and then back to the land. In summer I'd sleep in the car for air conditioning (prius) and in winter I'd set up a hot tent with a wood stove. I would cook with some butane/propane portable stovetop or whatever. Basically my questions are: how viable is my plan? And, should I build an outhouse or just shit in a hole and piss wherever?

What should i bring other than the obvious?
I am not a complete beginner, as i was in the Australian army 10 years ago but this will be the first time ever, alone, as a civillian, without a logistical support, in a country with bears.

Really my goal is to be away from people, catch and cook my own food (probably fish given gun laws here) and just fucking chill. Maybe set up a telescope.

I have an entrenching tool, hatchet, and probably some other semi-useful stuff in a footlocker. Pretty sure my bivy is fucked though.

It should be very viable if you can dodge potential zoning laws in the county you preside in. Build a tarp awning next to your car for general shelter. Build an outside with a compost shitter bucket. make a gravity fed shower etc. maybe a solar panel and inverter. I think it would be pretty exhilarating to live more primitively. make sure you have a way to charge your battery in case you accidentally run down your battery.

I feel like a fucking idiot; this thing won't work for me. Trying to smoke a tanned piece of leather like pic related to water proof it, and I was outside for probably two hours trying to get this thing lit. What the other guy (>>1682063) said. Stuff like baby wipes and alcohol wipes should be good enough. Iso alcohol and a paper towel cleans my hands really well so I don't see why a wet wipe and then an alcohol wipe wouldn't do quite well, just make sure to dry the alcohol on your hands before putting them in or else it's going to burn a lot.

If you do this, use nitrile gloves as they're way better at fitting your hands and get in the way less. Harbor Freight always has coupons out for 20% off anything in store, so you could get them there for ~$7/box of 100.

If your bag is down then putting a blanket on top of it will reduce how warm it is by preventing the down from lofting properly.
Your sleeping bag and clothes should be all you need. If you think you need to bring a blanket too then your bag isn't warm enough.

Wool blankets are nice and all but imo are super larpy. We've moved on from them. Buy a decent sleeping bag. It'll be lighter, warmer, and more packable.

I used to do it every time I went camping 20 years ago. Ravioli, beefaroni, etc. Most food cans are made of steel, while drink cans are aluminum. The real problem is having to deal with the can after you are done. You can't really reuse it, and now you have to pack it out covered in soot and baked on food grime. It is better just to get a pot made for cooking. There was a study where steel cans have been seen to leave traces of chromium and nickel behind through repeated use - so take it for what its worth.

I didn't say I get too hot, I just sweat excessively. I could be freezing to death wearing absolustely nothing and my body would still sweat it's ass off at any sign of exertion. Clothing changes aren't an option, and I haven't found anything that works other than just constantly switching between wearing only my base layer and my outer layers.

It's not dangerous to drink from wild rivers here unless there is a dead animal further up the stream.
I've drank water from both lakes and swamps without boiling it and never gotten sick. By my cousins cabin there is water spurting out of the swampy ground like a fountain, we drink from that and it tastes pretty good. We call it "The fountain of youth"

If you plan on spending more than a couple nights in a row, avoid down. A winter sleeping bag is easy to sweat in, and you really don't want to be stuck in a wet down bag at below freezing temperatures.

You can't do it without a stove/portable heater unless you maybe do the hot rocks trick. Tents have nearly no insulation, so you need a lot of it to raise the temperature even a few degrees.
I wouldn't even try it with a normal tent. A tent that traps air and heat will also trap moisture, which will either make water drip from your tent onto your bag or a layer of ice that coats everything.
A propane or similar heat source is nice though for just warming hands and drying clothes as long as the ventilation is good.

Alright. I want to do the Tour of Mont Blanc trek this summer: most people say it takes anywhere between 8 to 12 days to complete.

I dayhike a lot but I've never trekked before. How many liters should I aim for? I might do Compostela in the future too starting from Lyon (France).
