Weekly "I'm a suburbanite and want to go /out/ thread.

Given the general frequency of these types of threads and how 9/10 links in the sticky are dead, why not have a big thread for beginner information to help out fatherless retards learn beginner skills to help on their journey towards being /out/doorsman. Fire starting, proper layering, navigation, how to distribute weight in your pack, basic camping skills. Infographics or any general tips would be appreciated.

Most of the seceding states mentioned slavery in the declaration of secession. Yes it was about states rights and taxation, but the state right most important was the right to define who was going to be considered a full person, and the taxes were taxes on finished goods imports which were required for a simple slave powered agricultural economy to survive on.

However the war wasn't started by secession, it was started when the south started to attack federal military reservations.

The South's biggest error was removing their congressional delegations. Treaties of statehood and of annexation have not been unilateral. Secession cannot therefore be unilateral either. If they wanted to leave, they needed to ratify a secession agreement in the Senate, and this they failed to do. Crying about failing to achieve this goal via force of arms is pointless.

Going to go on a 2wk camping trip somewhere in North Carolina around April for my birthday. Probably going to grab a big tent as a base camp, then hike out for day trips.

Any recommendations for locations? Distance from the coast doesn't matter too much. Anything I should know? Spent 6 years in California, was gone for the summer, so I have no idea how NC summers are. 4x4 available.

6 states that had slavery and either rejoined the Union, were under Union control or never left the union had slaves after the war ended.

The civil war was from 1871-1865.
In 1863, West Virginia split from Virginia and joined the union AS A SLAVE STATE.
Yes, in the middle of the civil war, the north- who were "fighting to end slavery"- admitted a new slave state to the union.

What do people actually spend time doing when hiking? I imagine people hike for 5 to 6 hours, spend an hour (being generous) per meal and an hour roughly to set up camp. That adds up to 10 hours, so what do people do for the other 6 or so hours assuming 8 hours sleep? Even if you were to hike for longer periods you'd still likely end up with a few hours before bed with nothing to do.

Only thing I can think of is reading, but personally I don't like reading for extended periods (ie more than an hour)

You'll probably be fine, but Utah has good gun laws. If you're so worried just pick up a cheap handgun like a s&w m&p 2.0 (used if you can) and get a carry permit.

Can't speak for hikers, but for me when I go cycling for a couple of weeks, most of the time is spent enjoying the places I end up. Every little town and village in Normandy and Brittany, for example, has a beautiful church, so I spend some time admiring the architecture. Or there's one town I found by sheer chance when I was on my way to Paris that has some beautiful waterfalls. Spent the night there, went for a short hike to enjoy that. Considered retiring there.
