Pic related - sand spurs. Going for a nice barefoot walk on the beach when one of these guys digs into your foot. Then when you yank it out, it gets stuck in your finger.

I was driving through New Mexico once and made a stop at a gas station. Everything had these sharp grass seeds (with extra straw-like material attached, probably 5+ inches long) embedded in it. I mean soft materials, the wood side of the building, large tractor tires, etc. Everything that was facing the wind had these seeds sticking out. The proprietor said they were "needlegrass" and that it was very common, but I've never seen it again, nor found out what specific plant it was.

Seemed horrific to leave near.

Otherwise, here in CA, it is definitely Poison Oak, just because it limits your movement so much in areas where it grows dense. It really isn't that bad though, definitely not as bad as mosquitoes.

I bought some property and found these bastards peppering the grass in about a quarter acre area.
I would get home from work and spend 30-60 minutes a night pulling them up by the roots.
Did this for months the first year.
Second year was almost as bad but I didn't give up.
Third year seemed like I was making progress.
This year I only found a handful.

So fuck those bastards, I won.

I was out harvesting some wild sumac to make that tasty lemonade and waded through an entire grove of poison sumac in a swamp and didn't end up getting any rashes. I also got heat exhaustion once on my mountain bike and laid down in the shade, and when I got my senses back I realized I was lying in poison ivy. again, no rash. i wonder if I'm immune to the urushiol

When I went to Mexico, there was a tree that dropped stuff like that. They were about 1 inch across and hid in the fucking sand. It was murder since everyone left their shoes miles away. Thankfully, it was the only tree in 30 miles that had that shit.

Agreed. Like most invasive fuckplant weeds it's insidious. It's rife in the UK because Victorians loved exotic deadly plants for their posh gardens, and they imported it from west Asia en masse, and now it grows wild all over and maims kids on a nearly weekly basis. I'm from New England and as a kid it was unseed, but now entire groves of it keep popping up all over, including recently in my own town. Fisheries and Wildlife has been really good at stamping it out though, as soon as a stand is identified they go full napalm to eradicate it. As recently as 2017 there were like half a dozen identified in MA and this year there were like 50. Who knows what that might mean for the future.

is covered in microscopic silicon needles that break off easily and get stuck into your skin.
the needles release venom over the course of 6 months up to a year.
every time the muscle tissue in the affected area is moved or temperature changes (ie: taking a shower) the needles release more venom.
there's no treatment or cure other than "wait for your skin to grow and gradually push them out of your body"

just basic blackberry bushes are miserable- huge tangles of thorns that are very hard to get rid of.

another- foxtails. not so bad for humans but brutal for dogs. The tip when dry is hard and sharp as a needle. they are serated and go in smooth like silk but cant be pulled out cuz of bushy spikes. My dog got one embedded in his scrotum once. not good.

I have a ton of maple trees- one of my favorites is around 80 feet tall (I can see it from all around my property). It lost some limbs in a storm so I hiked down into the forest to recover them. That wasn't happening because it was so overgrown. I decided to head back in a different direction and got in some blackberry's. Instead of going back the way I came, my dumbass thought if I could just get through this area, it would get easier...
Took me over an hour to make it 100 yards.

When they get a little drier in about a month I'm going to torch that shit.

Prickly Pear, damn!

I got chased by hornets and ran through an area with small prickly pears I didn't see. They stuck in my shoe while running and then one of the pairs got stuck in my shoe.

Is I later realized there were multiple clumps on the one that got stuck to my shoe and in running I kicked one up and it went through my shorts and stuck to my scrotum. With the adrenaline going (and more pressing concerns) I didn't realize it until things calmed down.

They are a lot harder to remove from your balls then they are from your feet.

They look like an even shittier version of the sand spurs in the OP, which we have in abundance in the Southeast. When they age they turn brown like that and the spikes get harder. We also have Devil's Walking Sticks in all of the swamps.

Yeah it's the toxins in the sap, which can be absorbed through your skin. The problem is these things are in Florida so it's pretty easy to duck under one to get out of the rain. The fruit is called death apple. On a really public beach specialists will come and cut them down but if you're a paddler they're all along the river banks and blend in. If there's no fruit they're difficult to spot.

I live in CA and I have poison oak on me right now. It brushed my leg while backpacking in shorts last weekend. I didnt scratch but the oil is rejected by your skin and spreads. I think it got on my towel after a shower when I dried my entire body and is currently on my shoulder, chest, forearm, penis, both shins as I type this. I need to get some fucking hiking pants and remove them when not in use.

Worst is my parents took my kid on a hike and thier dog ran though the poison oak and my kids were petting the dog afterwards like normal. 2 weeks of waking up at night crying etc.
